I am just about to finally bite the bullet and order an 8.33 mhz radio. I currently have a Microair 760 and favour the Trig TY91 as a direct replacement. Has anyone made the transition from Microair to Trig TY91? If so what are the pitfalls to beware of. From trawling the web I see that Bournemouth Avionics seem to be offering the Trig at a good price. Anyone used this company?

Hi Richard

Made the change 12 months ago. Excellent choice and having the ability
to listen on 2 frequencies at the same time is really useful.

Only issue with the install was that I had to run a third wire to the
headset jacks. Bit of a pain as my headset jacks are in the rear roof
panel. This may have been required because the original installation
used a separate intercom, which has now been removed.

No knowledge of Bournemouth Avionics.

Regards

Pete

Hi Richard

The pitfalls depend on the existing configuration and your intentions. As
you know the Trig has a good built in intercom so no need to worry about
getting connection to an existing Intercom right. The biggest complication
I came across with an existing installation without an intercom is that many
PTT switches are simply wired in parallel. The TY91 has a priority circuit
so that if both crew try to transmit at the same time it gives P1 override
powers. This means the PTT switches have to be separately wired. Not a
problem electrically but often a pain because of the access to the stick
wiring. If you intend to keep your existing intercom the Trig wiring
diagrams helpfully explain the connection requirements for a small range of
intercoms. If yours is not on the list you are on your own but gives you
the general idea. Trig themselves are very helpful if you hit any
installation snags.

The TY91 has a separate control head so that you can mount the main unit in
a supplied tray anywhere that is convenient. This is OK with a new
installation but finding somewhere to mount it on a Europa is a bit of a
puzzle and can involve lots of wiring changes because of the physical
location of the main unit being very different to the standard fit on the
panel.

Mendelsons normally offer to make a loom for you but current demand
precludes that unless you are prepared to wait a long time. They will,
however, supply the wiring in lengths you want FOC.
Good luck!

Hmm! Installation could be a problem then. I fitted a Trig transponder a while ago and struggled to find a place for the main unit for that. Anyone got any other recommendations for a one piece radio which will fit in my existing 2 1/4 inch hole. I already have an intercom. I note Mendelssohns offer FUNKE and Dittel which would appear to do the job. Any feedback on these units?

I have a Dittel KRT 2, bought in 2013 and I'm satisfied with it (incidentally it is also very lightwight).

However the handling is not everyones cup of tea, but for my brain it's okay Smile The Dittel is also equipped with dual watch.

I'm currently installing the TY91 into a new panel.

Because I had to do both the Mode S and 8.33 I decide to start a panel from scratch.

I haven't used the Trig equipment "in vane" yet, But from the installation point of view, very easy.

I did select it for three main reasons. Firstly I preferred the user interface to the others, secondly the control heads do allow for very flexible installations, and thirdly, the integrated intercom, removes the need for a separate piece of kit.

I am trying to find a window of a few days in the next weeks to install the panel, and complete the last bits of wiring. I need to install an RDAC to run MGL EFIS/EMS in addition. I can report back once I have done the final fit to the aircraft.

Another thing to be aware of with Trig, is that the Sub D connectors supplied have crimp terminals. This makes wiring between the control unit and radio very clean and easy relative to (my) soldering. But the cost of the Mil Spec crimping tool is eye watering! (yes I have a little used one for sale now!). I do think the Trig installation manuals are very comprehensive.

I made up a tray which copied the physical dimensions of my old avionics sub-panel (Trig radio and transponder). In photo, head units are at the bottom (can't see them very well), followed by a row of circuit breakers and the scrappy bit on top is the power supply for the GPS (must put it in it's own little box). PL1 is the same interface to my intercom as existed in the old avionics sub panel.
