Hi All



I'm working on fitting the tailplanes to the torque tube (chapter 18 in the build manual).

My starboard tailplane fits on reasonably easily but the port tailplane will only fully engage if I "assist" it in to place with a hammer.Â  Removing the tailplane them becomes a 15 minute exercise involving gentle prying.Â  This does not seem right to me.

I'm going to check the alignment of the TP12 drive pins with the torque tube as I suspect the pins may not be as parallel to the tube as they need to be.Â 

I assume I should be able to attach and remove the tailplanes without the use of any tools.

I have attached a photo of the offending assembly in case it is not clear what parts I'm talking about.

I'd like to know how "snugly" should the tailplane fit on the torque tube from those who have made it past this point in construction.

Hi Graeme,



I assemble the tailplanes on the torque tube any time I go flying since my Europa lives in a trailer. All should come together (and apart of course) without the use of ANY force (incidentally that's also stated in the POH).



Good luck with troubleshooting.

They should be a snug fit, but certainly no hammer needed; should be easy to connect and disconnect with a little force.

Thanks Tim.Â  It is good to know that the fitting should be snug with a little force, now I know what to aim for.



After sending the email I had a close look at the pins and I think one of them was slightly out of parallel with the torque tube.Â  I've adjusted the pin slightly (yes, with a hammer  and I'll reassemble later tonight and see how it goes.

Hello Graeme,



As Tim said a snug fit, I fit mine fully home with a nudge from the 

palm of my hand and to remove I use a Trowel inserted between 

the fuselage and the tailplane to leverage clear of the drive pins. 

Works well.

Hi Graeme, yes definitely no hammer needed, if you slide a piece of metal tube of the same internal diameter over the pin you will soon see if it is aligned correctly with the torque tube and using the tube it will be easy enough to bend the pin into alignment

The pins on my TP12 drive plates were a long way out of alignment as supplied. 



All I did was drill a 1/4" hole in the end of a piece of straight solid bar approx  300 mm in length.  Placing the rod over the pins, I then made the necessary adjustments until the bar was parallel to the torque tube when viewed in two planes at right angles to each other. 



Drilling the hole of course requires the use of a lathe but that should not be too hard to come by.

We seem to recall we had to "adjust" the pins to make our tail planes fit properly too.  You can probably use a 1/4" drive deep well socket to slide over the pin and adjust it.



We also found that lubrication is necessary.  We use anti seize compound on the torque tube itself and the pins.  This is especially necessary once in service since it is possible for moisture to weep past the pip pin and cause corrosion at the bearing inside the tailplane.  We wipe a little anti seize on a stick to reach that bearing prior to installing the tailplanes.
