Obviously I have not grounded something properly, but I am at a loss.
I have two cigarette lighter plugs wired into my aircraft. They are to provide power to my iPad on longer flights. I have noticed that whenever I have the iPad plugged in I get some static when I receive a transmission. Otherwise the radio is quiet. Not sure what to make of this. Why is it only on receiving? I would think that if it was a ground issue, I would have the static all the time.
If there is nothing plugged into the power plug, I have no issues at all.
Any ideas as to what I should check first.

I suggest you check your battery first (age, charge level, capability to take a charge). You could be pushing it over the limit and may not hear any issue when transmitting.
Easy checks that could solve the issue.

Can you manually open the squelch on your receiver? If so, is the noise present when there is no transmission being received? If so, I suspect that the adapter that powers your iPad is emitting lots of RF noise and it's time to find a better one. I had the same problem with my plane, but mine was so bad that it was noisy enough to break the squelch on its own.

unfortunately there are a lot of those cheap USB power adapters for lighter plugs on the market. A lot of them are producing RF interference. I have had the same problems. You have to try a few until you find one that is not causing RF interference.
