Chandelle Standard 18' hang glider in 1977 was my first aviating and first aircraft I owned. Stalled it and ended up 40' up in a pine tree once. Didn't get hurt. Neither did the hang glider, but tricky to retrieve.
First powered airplane was a Cascade Ultralights Kasperwing 180B. Odd control system in that roll was a steering wheel working wingtip rudders while pitch was weight shift. But it was OK and one of the best planes ever for the super slow end of the speed range. I think I could fly straight and level at 22-24 mph all day.

Yeah, Brother Possum... and furthermore, when the difference is expressed as a percentage of the totals, you're clearly gaining on me...

You're gonna love geezerhood.... let me the second to welcome you... right after your urologist....

Thinking about this list of Brother Fackler's...  and reflecting on the biggest difference between a 65 horse Aeronca and the Firefly... The 7AC definitely "flew" on the wing and not on the engine... Every time I fly the Firefly, can't help but get the impression that it is almost the exact opposite -- it climbs like hell whether the ball is in the middle or not. Personally, that wing v.s. power perception about any given airplane is probably the single most defining characteristic stuck in my head when walking away from one... And it makes sense that a machine with stingy power will tend to force a student to learn more, faster... and have a better feel for what is happening under his butt...
Ah, the good 'ol days...

If Airport Manatee isn't flooded tomorrow, will go insult the rotax until it caves in and permits some limited aviation.

My first airplane ride, at age 12 was in a Curtiss Condor, a big (to
me) twin engine BIPLANE. I can remember being helped up the steps and
into the wicker seats, Think it had 10, maybe 12 seats. Ride cost $3,
lasted maybe 20 mins. Not many passengers.1935 was still The Great
Depression. Afterwards the Pilot took a few minutes to answer some of
my zillion questions, and pointed out the many various gages. I told
him I made balsa wood flying model airplanes and wanted to grow up
and be a pilot. He said he still wasn't grown up yet!

Brother and Sister Aviators:

Thanks to everyone who responded to the First Airplane poll. If we could get
those who didn't supply me with the year, and possibly a few of the lurkers
to chime in as well, I believe the cumulative total of years of flying
experience for this group might just top 2000 years. Yep, you read that
right, 2000. We're at over 1800 now.

So, this is a final plea. If you haven't sent your info, please email me
direct at kfackler(at)ameritech.net with your full name, first airplane you
flew as PIC, and the year.

Again for reference, the website is:

Thanks Ken for a GREAT question that started an avalanche of replies. And for taking the time to document them to the Internet and sharing with us all. It was a simple yet amazing question that I know I have enjoyed following the responses to, as I am sure many of the listers here have also! Great job!!!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Ken has already added this info but i thought i would post it here as well.

The first time I left the ground was for 1 hour of aerobatic instruction in a T-6 Texan. The date was 8/18/1996. Attached is a pic of my final preflight briefing.

One of my more memorable flights was also in an AT-6 for an hour of aerobatics. What surprised me was how much of the actual aerobatic flight I was allowed to do, with the instructor walking me through each maneuver. My pilot/instructor Gina Moore is best known as the only female barnstorming pilot in America. She owns the business Warbirds SkyVenture based in Gallatin TN. HIGHLY recommended if you ever get the chance!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

To maintain Kolb connective, I plan on second round of taxiing practice this weekend, and since I will not be able to make OSH this year hope to arrange so flight time with a CFI here who trains for Sport Pilot.

To everyone traveling to OSH this coming week, please have a great, SAFE time!
