I have just threaded the throttle and choke cables through the firewall. They turn out to be twice as long as needed to fix them to the engine. Shortening them does not seem to be an option so what to do? Loop them around? Behind or in front of the firewall?

yes I had the same confusion....and almost shortened them. Dont!
However the throttle cables loop forwards of the firewall i suppose to give smooth curves (as it were). It is a full 360 deg loop.

Jeroen, Things may have changed or be different for a non 914, but the way my 914 fitted in 2002 and have just refitted in last couple of months was for both the choke and throttle cables to split to either side of the engine. The choke cables then take a gentle curve inwards, run alongside each other just in front of the air box (but in different directions) to come at the top of the carb on the other side from where they started. Those cables were the correct length. The throttle cables however just run directly to the carb on their initial side with a slight S bend but no loop or deviation across the midline. I cannot remember for certain now whether they were longer than needed, although I think they were, but shortening them should not be a problem. Cut the outer to the required length with the inner wire withdrawn. Replace the inner wire and cut that once you have threaded it through the throttle attachment and having put a bit of tight heat shrink over the bit you are going to cut, to stop it splaying. Friction within the throttle sheathing is a potential problem as you are relying on a fairly weak spring to pull the throttle wide open, so you want gentle curves and no more than necessary.

I would agree with everything David said about throttle and choke cables plus add a couple of remarks as I recently replaced both on my aircraft. I thought I would be clever and cut them to length beforehand which meant I ended up cutting them twice!
Install the cables find the length you require and then (having removed the inner cable) cut the outer to length, debur the hole to avoid premature wear on the cable.
Install the inner cable, on the carburetter and through the nipple. Then heat up and apply soft solder either side of where you want to cut the inner, a good 25 mm in length, then use a good pair of cutters to remove the excess (which can be used to make a good spring puller for the exhaust!) It helps to degrease thoroughly beforehand.

I have read with interest the discussion on the routing of the choke and throttle cables. They were quite long when I installed them some time ago now and I didn't understand why the routing was so convoluted. After a lot of thought I cut my cables and installed them in almost a direct line from the throttle box, up through the tunnel, through the fire wall made a small change in direction and attached them to the carburetor. The choke cables almost the same. From a recessed bracket in the instrument panel up through the fire wall a small change in direction and onto the carburetors. There is almost no friction as there is very little change in direction of the cables. I have used fire retardant sealing for the cables as they go through the fire wall. Have I missed something here, or is there some good reason why you put almost 360 degrees change of direction in the cables?
