Hi guys,
Trying to do weight and balance on my plane. Is the datum at the firewall?

Section 4 of the build manual covers the station reference points
Quote "The longitudinal locations on an aircraft are described as stations,
and the station dimensions are generally in inches as measured aft of the
reference station. Negative station locations are for those locations which
are forward of this reference point. Various builders and designers use
different techniques for establishing the reference "zero" station location.
In some cases this may be an imaginary vertical plane completely in space in
front of the aircraft. For the KIS aircraft the zero station is located at
the aft surface of the propeller spinner. A reference station at STATION 32
will be established during the fuselage assembly at the moulded in "joggle"
which provides clearance for the aft edge of the cowling. All components
added to this assembly will be located based on this station reference
plane.. The station locations will continue to be of importance after the
assembly of the aircraft is completed, particularly in weight and balance
determinations. Station locations of major components are required for
computations of weight and balance to assure safe loading of any aircraft".
Be aware that in some cases the cowlings did not fit very well ( they were
too short) and this joggle line was built up by some builders . If you
suspect this the remove the lower cowling and drill a small hole as close
to the stainless steel firewall and then the Station 32 will be 5/16"
further aft ( 1/4 for the ply firewall and 1/16 for the fibrefax and
stainless steel sheet )

I should have added that Station 0 ( aft face of the propeller spinner) ,
probably only applies if you have the original CAM 100 motor (that was
fitted to the first factory demonstrator). that's why everything should be
referenced back to Station 32 as this is a constant on every build
regardless of the motor up front .
