Of the label printers that we have talked about, will the heat shrink tube labels get small enough to label 20 gauge wire?

Art,
The DYMO RHINO 4200 that I illustrated certainly will do 20 ga wire. The LR3C-14 was wired with both 20 and 18 ga wire.

I used the Rhino 4200 to label wires down to 24awg. Works great. No fading after 4 years.

Ah! Google finally surfaced the answer: K-Sun's 1/8" and 3/16" tubing will hold on 20 AWG tefzel wire.K-Sun Shrink Tube Instruction Manual gives the wire diameters in mm that each tubing size will fit.
The MIL-W-22759/16 spec 20 AWG tefzel wire that I got from Aircraft Spruce is about 1.74 mm in diameter.
22 AWG is about 1.34 mm in diameter so K-Sun 1/8" tubing will work on that, too.
Assuming that Dymo's 3:1 heat shrink tubing has approximately the same specs as K-Sun's 3:1 tubing, it will not work as well in my application. The 1/4" shrinks only to 2.31 mm which is too large for 20 AWG tefzel wire. (According to the specs. Maybe it will work anyway but I don't know.)

Has anyone looked into custom printed heatshink? I wonder if that's more economical than buying the labeler? I found several places that do it, but only one has a price listed:$29 for 100 pieces of 1/8 3:1 heatshrink. That's for .75"-1" length. They say they can print serial numbers, not sure how much control you have over the serial numbers.

If I were buying a tubing printer, I wouldn't be overly concerned about it 'grabbing' the wire after shrinking. In fact, I wouldn't even worry about shrinking at all, in most cases. If the wire is in a bundle, the label isn't going far, and as long as it can't get past the terminator, it won't get lost. And there will be times when moving the label could have its advantages. Ex: when the printing is on the 'back side' of a wire in a bundle, or aligned with a half-dozen other labels in the bundle.

The Dymo 1/4" heat shrink will shrink down to fit over 24AWG wire. On 22AWG will, you will have to encourage it to move. On 20AWG wire, you will have to really encourage it to move.

I am confused. K Sun sells many different diameters of tubing. Does Dymo only sell one diameter?

They also sell 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" and 1".

You were asking about heat shrink tubing that would work on 20AWG wire. The Dymo 1/4" shink tubing works fine on 20AWG.

Art,
If you go to Gateway Electronics in Maryland Heights, you will walk out with all the clear shrink wrap you need at very low prices. They also have three sizes of clear spiral wrap for under the panel work. It is in a room to the right as you walk in and they cut it for you. Very inexpensive. They also have ready made molex connectors that come in nearly any count.
Good luck,
Ron Burnett

May you have the Lord's blessings today!Sent from my iPad
