I know it is ‘Old Hat’ nowadays but it was still a great experience for me. . . .
On Thursday morning last, I conducted the first flight of Classic Mono VH-CUA from my home at Gatton Airpark in Queensland Australia.
The 45 minute flight was one of sheer enjoyment so to reiterate the advice of many others before me, I’d just like to say to those still doing what I have been doing for so long . . . . keep at it, the reward is worth it!
In anticipation of possibly having to do surgery to accommodate our hot conditions, I have not yet painted the engine cowlings or applied any pin striping but as things progress, those items will be forthcoming.
The main wheel fairing and outrigger fairings were left at home for the first flight too.
Attached photo was taken from the chase plane while comparing indicated airspeeds.
If interested, an abridged version of the flight can be seen at

Cheers

Kingsley, flying an aircraft which you built yourself is an experience which is hard to beat. From what I can see in the photo, it looks like you have the Classic cowlings with the tailpipe of the double silencer poking out underneath. This leads me to think that you have the 912UL installed, which is just fine for most purposes, especially in a mono.
In your climate, if you decide to install the 100hp 'S' then cooling could become an issue, as I discovered. Some folk in this cooler part of the world have managed to overcome cooling problems arising from 100hp in a Classic cowling, but I resorted to a complete firewall forward refit with cowlings more capable of proper cooling.
May you have many years of enjoyment!

Kingsley, Many congratulations! (Both personal and on behalf of the club). When you have got time it would be good to have an account of the high an low spots of the build process and the flying to go in the Europa Flyer.

A hearty congrats Kingsley, it's no small achievement to build and fly your own plane, and (for me anyway) it's been one of life's milestones.
Do share more about your mainwheel fairings, i'm interested.

Thank you one and all for your kind words and encouragement both on and off list. I’m really quite surprised at the level of support given so many have already gone before. . . . guess it proves we don’t have to all purchase a Toyota to enjoy that “Oh! what a feeling” experience. Also proves of course what a great band of people we have on our Europa List.
Graeme Engine is the plain original 912 80 HP
Tim In case you haven’t noticed, it is the same distance across the ditch in both directions . . . . . I’m waiting on you mate to show me how it’s done!!
Jonathan Your observations and assumptions were 100% correct my friend.
David GXSDJ I will endeavour to oblige as requested for the Europa Flyer but it may take a little time sorry.
Pete One of my Grandsons has insisted I install his Go Pro so hopefully there may be some more footage one day.
Clive My mainwheel fairing is not a work of art like some but I’ll send you something off list.
Cheers

PS Haven’t had a chance to commit aviation again yet . . . . Life is already getting in the way of flying just as it did with the building! and people asked me what I was going to do in retirement???
