I should have been a bit clearer myself on the ground wire off that unit since --you're gonna love this-- it's not on the diagram!
Yes, there is actually a separate ground wire that is not depicted on that diagram, and again, for some reason it's quite robust (~12-14AWG). So I measured the distance from the case that I tied into that big ground wire with my 22AWG lead for the AD626 (-) input at 4.5 inches.

That may be the ground return for the
9A coil charging current cited in the installation
manual. For your purposes, tying AD626(-) input
to the same airframe ground as this wire may
not be a problem but after you've got the
system up and running, you may observe
behaviors that prompt further inquiry and
perhaps relocation of the instrumentation
ground. Given the short length, you're
probably going to be okay.
