|
|
Hello All,
Can I please ask the collective experience here for some advice?
I am looking to buy an ANR headset to use in my Yak-52. I have narrowed my search down to the Lightspeed Zulu 3 or Zulu PFS.
Has anyone had experience of these headsets in a Yak or CJ-6? I have only ever used the passive David Clark and ASA headsets.
From what I have read, the PFS has the better 'sound proofing' than the Zulu 3, but if the advertising is to be believed I am concerned that I won't be able to hear the engine if (when) it goes bad. Can you judge airspeed by the wind noise when you are wearing one of these?
I am thinking the 3 is fine, but for another $200 I can get the latest and greatest..... Is is $200 wasted or invested?
I am also thinking of one of the flying helmets that Gibson & Barnes do for these headsets so it doesn't fall off during aero's. Has anyone tried one of these?
Thank you in advance for your advice and comments.
Regards
Chris

I’d be more concerned about your head protection. If you wear a chute, you need a dome. In short, buy a Gentex or an Alpha (or MSA Gallet if you’re feeling particularly rich) and get a set of CEP-USA earplugs wired in. I’ve done this with an Alpha for years and it’s superb. Better than ANR and your brain remains in the original container following the impact.

Get a helmet. The Liightspeed squeals when doing Acro.

Haha, I am hearing you Jay. The unfortunate thing is that I am 6'4" tall and there isn't enough room for me to wear a helmet under the canopy. I tried it once and spent the whole time banging my head on the canopy everytime we hit a bump.
Also, without wanting to start another debate, we don't have parachutes in our plane. The captain goes down with the ship!

I’ve seen the Lightspeed headsets get over-driven by the noise in a CJ.
The Bose do not have this problem.

I have been using a Clarity Aloft for years. Bonanza and CJ. Not noise canceling but they are fabulous. Weigh less than 2 ounces and you don't even know they are on. My wife loves them when she is my gib. My girlfriend loves them when my wife doesn't go (just kidding y'all). When wearing my helmet (most of the time), I just slide my helmet on. The CEP earbuds on the Clarity with the Helmet seals combined and your in the vacume of space.

I know this isn't one of the sets mentioned, but I have a Bose port and use Bose sets in my Yak. I cut ANR off for takeoff and landing, but it is GREAT for everything else. Engine is a LOUD rumble that makes it hard to hear what people are saying on the radio, then I switch on ANR and it is a quiet hum, really nice.
I just got a clarity aloft type set that I'm going to try out once I correct an air leak. It isn't ANR, but as stated above, I'm hoping the earplugs plus helmet seal are just as good.

Clarity Aloft is one of the most returned headsets according to Tina of TinasPilotShop.com which sells a private labeled Lightspeed ANR headset that is superb for $279

Hi,
I got a David Clark One-X. Light, very comfortable and excellent noise reduction. The switch box is also small enough. Noise reduction is very good in a Yak.
A friend uses a Lightspeed PFX in the Yak. I tried it, but its heavier, the switch box is bulky and noise reduction is not on par with the DC. Dont know the Zulu.
Both headsets work fine together and do not interfere with different audio/radio systems.
My old Sennheiser always had trouble with other headsets, I had to switch the noise cancelling off due to audio distortions. Some headsets do not like each other with some radios.

Sounds like the one I have. The headset works very well, but you definitely have to put a helmet and ear cups on over it in a Yak.
