I am looking for advise on the upcoming week. I have never been to OSH before and I am seeking info on several fronts.
1 How much cash for 3 nights camping stay
2 Which is better for camping HBC or camp Scholar
3 Where do you eat in the evening
4 Can you walk to a grocery for supplies
5 Where should I stop for fuel along the way
6 Is alcohol allowed on the grounds
More questions as they come to mind
Thanks

1. Everything is expensive at OSH ... very commercial ... you can pay for camping, entrance, etc by credit card .. so you just need enough for incidentals and food.
2. HBC ... you can now park with the RVs and camp right there ... great spot.
3. sometimes on the grounds ... walk to a nearby restaurant.
4. don't know
5. We are going on a different route ... you can go to www.airnav.com and plan a route around the cheapest fuel stops.
6. Don't know ... but bring a beer for me !!!

Not a direct answer to your questions but if you decide you wish to stay in the dorms instead, let me know.
There is a cafeteria there and daily transportation. I think they are $40 per night and the bus is $4 round trip per day. Food is around $10 for all you can eat.
Go as FAR NORTH as you can get before getting fuel.
Can you make it to Rockford? KRFD. I don't know the price of fuel there though.
What days are you considering?

1. $200 is plenty. ATMs on site if more is needed. Credit cards accepted
many places.
2. Either has it's advantages. I stayed at HBC lat year, it was fine.
There are more ammenities at camp S. (supplies, food, etc).
3. Bum a ride into town, or several options on site.
4. The Red Barn (?) is near camp Scholar. It has most anything you'd need.
5. Airnav.com. My current plan is GYY -- more expensive than some,
cheaper than many. Then along the lake underneath ORD. (Worked well
going home last year.)
6. Yes, unless something's changed.

1. Camping fees are $18 per night. See the EAA website, there is a
wealth of info there.
2. Camp Scholler is for drive in camping,
3. Plenty of places on the site to eat, various types of foods, not cheap
though.
4. There used to be (2) grocery store on site, one at the north end and
the other on the south end (at) Camp Scholler. Again, the EAA website should
have that info.
5. I always stopped near Chicago (in the 170). That left me plenty of
fuel when arriving at OSH for possible holding and traffic.
6. Alcohol used to not be allowed, however there seemed to be campers who
discreetly imbided their spirits. (normally at night after the day crowds
were gone).
The MOST important advice is to download the Notam, print it, study it,
know it, and have it handy upon your arrival. Be prepared to fly
slo.......w from Ripon to landing. You may be behind a Cub (he will be
flying at max cruise speed :<). Listed to the controllers, do what they
tell you, & don't talk on the frequency. EAA says there are several mass
arrival groups scheduled to arrive on Sat. the 23nd in the afternoon. If
you are planning on arriving then, you may want to reschedule your arrival.
There will be times when the field is closed to arrivals due to parking
saturation. However, if flying a show plane (any homebuild, antique,
classic, warbird, etc.), they will always allow you to land and they will
find a parking place for you.
Depending upon your arrival time and date, be prepared for a lot of
traffic. Also, they do not bend the aiport opening and closing times.
Take you tiedowns as your plane must be tied down. They usually are
available for rent, but it is better to have your own.
You will need good walking shoes and mosquito repellent. They raise them
big and a lot of them.

Not sure- about $15-18/nite- best check the website
Quote: | 2 Which is better for camping HBC or camp Scholar |
Camped HBC last year and it was a blast- your "campsite" is restricted to area behind your wings and the planes are parked pretty close, so it can be cozy- bring a small tent! They had a shower trailer last year that was excellent. Scholler is also great, but you will do a lot of walking or have to wait for trams. Bicycle is good xport if you can bring one. Very good camp stores, either by main entrance or Big Red Barn, which is fairly convenient to HBC.

Ace's cafeteria near Forums area had a decent spread last year, and there may be others, but not sure.

See above on camping

Nowadays, it's a crap shoot- try Airnav.com and make sure prices shown have very recent updates. They usually offer some discount at OSH, but it's looking like you'll pay through the nose regardless this year

I personally prefer it in the cooler, cup or belly- there are some restrictions, but Camp Scholler really knows how to party! Check website for details...
