Mike:
Do you have the ability to bench check the configuration before instlation?
Manufactures usually ask for 36" to 48" separation between antennas. Â
The transponder has an output of 100 to 310 Watts. That is a lot of signal to handle when close to another antenna. Â
You can usually move the transponder antenna forward just ahead of the landing gear. May be difficult to do with a tail dagger??? But, the transponder is an output device not a receive device so noise is not an issue, so forward works well. The Comm antenna - Well, noise is an issue, separation is mandatory.

Would it create a problem if the transponder and com antennas are close to each other?

Thanks

Define “close”, and define “problem”.
COM radios and tranponders use very different frequency bands.
I don’t think you’re going to find anyone to guarantee no problems, but depending on what “close” means, my inexpert gut feeling it’s unlikely.
It’s possible that you might hear a faint ticking noise on the radio while the transponder is powered.
