My Kitfox 3 has been in storage for several years and I am returning it to flying status. I have found several spots of surface corrosion on the flaperons. It apears to be completely superficial and is completely removed very quickly with 600 grit. I have cleaned some areas wit( MEK to expose the surrounding nickel chromate primer. I am planning on proceeding with simple removal and refinish.
I know from dealing with repainting part of the wing that it is not reasonable to expect to color match the original yellow so I would like to completely repaint them for simplicity so now I am trying to figure out how thoroughly I need to strip the flaperons before refinishing.
I was considering bead blasting, or maybe baking soda, and taking everything to aluminum and starting over. Will the thickness of aluminum used in the flaperons stand up to this?
If I strip paint away from trouble areas with MEK can I feather in primer and then repaint over the primer/paint surface with decent results?
Anyone else used these or a different technique with results they can share?
Thanks for any ideas.

The main thing is to not apply any significant pressure to the skin, either with blast or with sanding. If you do you'll distort it enough so the ribs will show through and they'll look ugly. I'd try chemical stripping, being careful to keep from getting chemical inside. I believe the ribs are foam and won't stand up to chemical attack. Chemical stripping depends on the kind of paint you're removing. Urethane will withstand any chemical attack and will have to be stripped by sanding or blasting. Anything else should be removable using paint stripper.
As to feathering the primer, that shouldn't be a problem. Whether it looks OK depends on the covering ability of the paint you're applying. Right now I'm fixing my aileron and am having to repaint part of it with red urethane. Unfortunately this particular red doesn't cover at all, so the sub-surface must be 100% one color. Any variation shows through the red. Yellow urethane is probably low pigment as well. You'll have to test.

James, Stripping the flapperons without damaging them will be tough. I think if it was me i'd sand lightly paint white and then go with the yellow. As Guy pointed out the pigments in reds and yellows is translucent so the white is required so you don't see through the color coat. You didn't say what paint you are using or what paint is currently on the parts. It matters.
