I am looking for information for the compass on my CJ.  Why does it have a clear window by the vertical stabilizer?  The paint shop did not cover my compass window and I am curious what effect that would have.

None!



On the CJ the heading sensor is actually a "master" magnetic compass.  It is 

calibrated (swung) in the same manner as any other magnetic compass but 

whether the window is painted or not you probably could not see through it 

in any case.  If you want to swing it you would remove the access panel.



I made the cardinal sin some time back by assuming on this list that the Yak 

52, etc.  had the same antiquated system.  Big mistake, they are much more 

modern.

Thanks for responding.  I am curious why the sensor has a window. As of tonight, my sensor has a clear view thru new plexi.

That’s to look through and read your heading while calibrating the compass 

system.  Though in fact the access panel would be removed in that case 

taking the window with it.

Hi Mark;



To be honest I have no idea what a flux valve is.  Whatever this is it no

doubt has a similar function.

It is a very large (about 8" dia.) horizontal (just like the standard floor

or shelf mounted WW2 era British aircraft compass though much larger)



It is complete with a very standard corrector magnet assy. A 6" (approx)

horizontal compass card with a viewing window and a shit load of coils, 

wires, etc. and a large

Cannon plug that presumably transmits heading data to the cockpit 

indicators.



Also holds about one quart of compass fluid (standard petroleum type- not 

whisky).



Looks like a compass to me.

Gotcha, sorry about the late reply.



Yes, no question ... if it has fluid in it, there is a freaking compass inside!  



A flux valve is a totally electronic array ... also with many coils, etc., also with correcting plates, but it has no moving parts.  It senses the actual Earth magnetic field directly and from that derives magnetic heading.  Usually there is also a Gyro involved that is in turn slaved to the flux valve.
