I am on an aviation list on FB, and one of the people came up with a brilliant way of figuring out bolt thread sizes. Here it is:
Philip Passmore Get a piece of soft wood dowel. Screw it into the hole, then screw it out and measure the length of five or ten 'ridges' to get the pitch. Measure across the dowel to get the major diameter (or at least pretty close).

Wouldn't it be easier to just spend $10 on a thread gage?

The post involved someone who had a C gearbox who could not get a stud to fit any of the mounting thread holes, he had a thread gauge, but still could not make things work out. Could not figure out what size stud would fit. So it was intended to be a low-tech expedient.
