To avoid psychological distress and the unnecessary expensive inconvenience of having to remove your Rotax 912ULS/S engine in order to change the starter sprag clutch prematurely, replace your aircraft's battery at intervals no greater than 2 years. Ensure that the battery is fully charged before any start attempt. This advice is particularly pertinent to engines fitted with the heavier propeller hubs, such as the excellent Airmaster.

Tens of thousands of Rotax owners go 3-5 years on a battery without any issues and it has nothing to do with the sprag clutch. Flying often and having a good battery maint. program or float charger keeps battery life to its fullest. If all you get is 1-2 years on a battery you're doing something wrong. The sprag clutch is affected because of continuous hard long starts and prop kickback. You should have neither and with the proper setup the engine should start on the first 1-2 prop rotations and NEVER have kickback. Having a good mechanic and understanding of the Rotax mitigates these issues.
