It would seem to be the attach point for the pulley for the pull start.

 I have been looking at your Kolb with a full enclosure, I was looking for ideas on how I was going to do just that. The question is what kind of cruse speed you are getting on that bird with wheel pants, enclosure, strut and wheel leg fairings, and what engine are you using? A question from a newbie to the site.

Roger that! That is not the one I am referring to, the one that needs to be cut is several inches lower and about 14" further back. Call Kolb and ask them.

I said enough with the paint stripper and took the fuselage to a sandblaster. 

Now that the weather is hanging in the upper 20's I be waiting for warmer days for painting. 







So what I have been working on is stripping down the engine for rebuild.

When I had the original fat aluminum gear, adding fairings to the gear changed the nose up/nose down trim noticeably, and added a couple of mph to the cruise speed.

Do not have wheel pants now.

The current enclosure gives me around 65 mph at 5400 rpm with the 582, IVO 72" 2 blade, and 2.58:1 B box.

The wing struts are extruded faired, so they are as good as they are going to get.

I just started to rebuild my barn find FS2 and the original plans show FS100 also, You may need to sand the end of the tube lightly to bring up numbers mine is marked F1002 with the latest revision 1993. I have been in touch with Kolb and they are going to see if they have records from that time period.



If there numbering is as most manufacturers use the "F" is the model The "1" is a control number and the last three Or four would designate build number. 



I could be completely WRONG! I will update when I find out.

I had an original Firestar, with the 5 rib wings.  Mine had no serial numbers on the root tube, nor did it have any kind of identification plate or numbers.

Sounds like the same as mine. 

Firestar II has a 7 rib wing design with apparently the build number stamped into the root tube end plate.

A friend and I built mine from a kit and plans in 1985/86. First flew it in the summer of 1986. It’s a great little original Firestar.  It’s been upgraded a bit since the early days.

My first one had the number FS11 it was built in 94, and its my understanding that it was the identification of the cage not a build number. I still used it as my serial number

Thank you for the information. 

The root tube and the rest of the fuselage is clean of paint to the metal. There is no numbers on the root tube front or back.

I have the engine apart. The cylinder walls look great and the pistons have carbon deposits. I will sand blast the complete engine exterior, I will do the pistons and heads also. The crank looks and feels great, no clicking or other strange noises from the bearings and they seem to be tight. The crank and the lower case is in solvent, so they will not be seen in the pic. 







We had a warm day, so the fuselage frame was painted.

I haven't posted for a while, when the weather is below 0 or even 20 the hanger is just to dang cold to work in. 

The engine is moving on. I had to order starter o rings thanks to the oil injection leaking over the starter and taking out the o rings. I still need to rebuild the carbs and install the starter. I went with the Challenger muffler mount. Here are a couple of pics. 















Forgive the messy shop. 

I spent the day working on the landing gear legs. The right tube was a bit small about half way in. I ordered a reamer and took care of that.

Bill, stainless will fatigue and crack like any other metal.   To reduce the chances, keep the vibration to a minimum, keep the exposed metal past the anchor point as short and light as possible, in order to make both rules happen,  add another brace.  In two directions (triangulate) if possible, safety wire works to keep small problems from going through the prop and becoming big ones. add vibration isolaters.

When you've done your best, grab it and shake looking for movement then keep an eye on it!

My experience with two strokes and hard mounted accessories is it is just a matter of time before a stress crack appears.  Unfortunately, everything that falls off the engine on a Kolb goes through the prop.

 

Important to do a thorough preflight each day, and continue to check the engine after landing.

 

I've lost muffler mounts, a football size oil tank for a 582, strobe light, lots of exhaust systems to vibration.  Had lots of problems with vibration and early exhaust systems on the 912.  Stainless with definitely let you down.  Keep an eye on it.

 

Beautiful flying weather at hauck's holler, but Miss P'fer needs some TLC before she will fly again.
