Hello All, 



I would like to ask your opinion on an engine issue: I have one cylinder on my M14P that is running about 40 deg C hotter than the rest. (I have a fancy, 9 cylinder CHT instrument, like a JBI). It was #3 running hot 



I swapped the leads with #4 cylinder and the indication followed the cylinder - #4 is indicating hot now = so, in fact the cylinder #3 is running hot and indicating properly I think....? 



I checked the intake tube for tightness and such, pulled the plugs - they look OK, perhaps a bit white....ish (hot) but not real bad. 



I am not sure what to check now or where to look for the problem........and ideas? 



I really appreciate any advice or help you can provide.

I'm not clear about what you said.  When you swapped the probes between #3 and #4, did the #4 cylinder indicate hotter than what it was before you swapped the probes?

I'm not quite clear on what you just described.  So let me ask this.  When you swapped the probes between #3 and #4 cylinders, did the #4 cylinder read hotter than what it was before you swapped the probes?

Sorry for the confusion.  #3 has been indicating hot for a while, but only at high power.  At idle and low power it was normal.



So I swapped leads with #4 cylinder.  Then #4 was indicating hot and #3 was normal - so I assumed the leads are OK and the #3 cylinder is actually running hot.

No, I disagree.  If after swapping the probe #3 was normal and #4 was reading hot, then your problem is most likely a bad lead.  ie:  The problem followed the probe.  Did not stay with the same cylinder.

The #3 cylinder was indicating high to start with.  So I swapped leads with #4 cylinder - put the #3 lead on #4 cylinder, and vice versa.  So....#3 INDICATION is reading #4 cylinder....and #4 INDICATION is reading #3 cylinder.



After the switch, #3 indication (#4 cylinder) was reading normal, and the #4 indication (#3 cylinder) was reading HIGH!

I think I understand now.  You should be checking the valve clearances.

also a good idea to do a compression test and check for valve leaks. Listen carefully for valve leaks.
