Dear Builders,

I would like to know if there is a size restriction on the add on windows that I see many builders have done.

I am almost certain that there would be but I would like to hear from those that are in the know.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Sincerely,

James M. "Clyde" Oyler

If I'm right and the Pulsar 1 did not have the rear windows, you would have to add plies in that area before you can cut holes there. The Pulsar 1 fuselage skins have thinner plies than the XP skins which have the windows. If you want to add those windows at all, don't make them any larger than they are on the XP, and add the plies as frame for the window. I don't know how many plies the window frames have though.

Hi,
Has anyone installed a BRS chute into a Pulsar XP?

Please connect with me if you have.

Someone had asked me if it was possible to do this and I had to discourage him. The Pulsar was not designed for a ballistic chute and retrofit is not possible.

I'm aware of one builder of an XP/ Jabiru 2200 who installed a BRS. It used a harness made of 1/8" steel cable instead of wide Kevlar straps like BRS would use. A canopy's single down-strap came down to a junction with a 4-strand cable harness to the fuselage. Two strands went to the tail, and connected to both sides of the horizontal stabilizer torque tube. Then two strands (or a single loop ?) wrapped around the bottom of the firewall, and was 'secured' there... I have no idea how it was secured.

I don't know when the work was done, but the JPEG I have is dated 9/14/2010 "on my computer". That could simply be the date I saved it (??), rather than the date of the BRS installation, or the date the original JPEG was posted by whoever did it.

When I downloaded the JPEG, I forwarded it to my son, who was an engineer at BRS. The JPEG pre-dated his time at BRS. He avoided making any 'corporate' comment about it, but off the record (son to dad), he wasn't very positive about it. Which, I guess, is a 'kind' way of characterizing what he really said about it.

We used to attend the EAA Fly-In every year, and would always visit the Pulsar exhibit. And we always studied the display planes and parts, so he was familiar with the Pulsar when he saw the JPEG of the BRS installation. He was very dubious that the airframe would survive the G-loads of the canopy opening at speed... which can be very substantial.

Regards,
Tim Engel

My memory is a little slow days, but I recall a picture of a Pulsar that was sliced from the tail to the seat back by a ballistic chute. Does anyone remember?

Not sure of the outcome, but the plane was salvage.

Dear All,

I have read news letter that was ever sent out and I know for certain that there are some 582 kits with windows installed in the back.

Thanks,
Clyde
