Can anyone tell me the purpose of the small air scoop on the lower left side of the Nanchang? Not on all CJs... Just a few that I've seen.

I imagine it is there to keep the pilot cool when the main fan (prop) quits
in flight!.

Jon,
Mine was also one of those unusual CJs that had this same air scoop. Did not appear to serve any purpose, so I later removed it and filled in the hole.
Here is a picture taken the day it was purchased and flown to Arizona from the Bay area. The scoop is visible on the lower cowling.

Mine has this scoop
I also suspect it was to supply fresh air to a cabin heat exchanger mounted on the port side exhaust manifold. Mine was missing the exchanger but did come with a mixing unit located between the front and rear cockpits and there were holes in the fwd firewall on both sides down by your feet that I believe the ducting could have passed through.
