Doing the annual on the CJ and found one of the exhaust manifold "donut" gasket needing replacement. I used an automotive asbestos gasket years ago to replace one but don't remember the part number. Any suggestions?

I am no expert on the Nanchang, but the seal between exhaust pipe and
cylinder head can be a problem area with the Russian M 14 engine. We
actually call them "olives", but I'm surprised that an automotive gasket is
thick enough – the standard size for the M 14 "olive" is actually 10 mm
thickness, and we produce oversize ones according to a customer's
requirement, and these have been up to 15 mm!

I believe Doug Sapp has them in stock. If not, then we have them in stock.

For general information - these items are identical for the M14P, Huosai and
AI14R engines. The attaching nut is larger for the M14P cylinder but the
sealing
area is the same.

Yes – I was simply interested in the dimensions in that a satisfactory seal
seems to have been made with an automotive exhaust gasket, and if that is
the normal "asbestos" with a thin copper sheet on each side, I suspect it is
probably only around 4 mm thick, whereas the standard exhaust "olives" that
we make for the M 14 engine are 10 mm thick, and for customers where the
cylinder head has become worn (through running the engine with the exhaust
nut loose), we sometimes make special order "olives" up to 15 mm thick!

Richard;
When you say 10 mm thick one envisions a solid piece of material. Though
I'm sure you are referring to the overall width which is approx. 10 mm it
could be confusing to those unfamiliar with these engines.
The only exhaust gaskets I have seen for these engines are formed from
steel, probably beginning in tubular form with a thickness of approx. 1 mm
(.04").
The sealing effect is obtained from the spring like resistance to further
deformation under tightening pressure of the nut.

No, these are absolutely solid, made out of a soft mild steel. The standard dimension is 10 mm thickness, but some operators/pilots allow the exhaust nut to become loose, so then the flanged end of the exhaust pipe begins to "fret" against the cylinder head, eroding the metal. In these cases, according to the requirement of people, we make bigger "olives" which have been up to 15 mm thickness.
