Although the last serial production M 14 P was made in 1994, the Voronezh Manufacturing Plant continued to make small numbers of "new" engines from existing parts, and inevitably using some overhauled parts. And of course Jim Wickersham bought (I believe) 150 totally new engines and slowly fed them onto the market until about 15 years ago, so inevitably some of those engines are sitting at the back of people's hangers!

That’s an interesting story Richard!
What about the M14R and M9F engines?
I know that they were partly assembled with older but never used parts, e.g.the magneto’s, oil and fuel pumps, air compressor ...
These older parts were very religiously inhibited/ de-inhibited every six or so months but effectively never used.
Did the Russians use some of the engines of the “Wickersham” batch when they upgraded to M14R or M9F ?

It is worth remembering the full background. The Russian system is that you have a design bureau and then a manufacturing unit, which could be thousands of kilometres away. However in this case, the story began with Ivchenko who developed the AI 14 engine (260 hp). In their wisdom in the 1960s, the Ministry of Aviation production decided that they should concentrate on small jet engines and gave the AI 14 design to a brand-new bureau, based in Voronezh headed by Vedenyev, and he went on to develop the M 14 P.
But all manufacturing was given to the Voronezh Manufacturing Plant, a very big business, 15 km away, making helicopters; the bureau and space shuttle et cetera, with the piston engines being a small part of the total. So they made all M 14 engines, with the exception of those that were made for the Romanian Yak 52s whose engines were made by their sister company, Motorstar, although all 52s for the Russian DOSAAF had Russian-made engines installed.
With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the funding for Vedenyev (also known as OKBM) dried up, but we kept them going with engine overhaul business, and also helped them with the funding for the M 14 PF engine. We then thought there was scope for a more powerful engine, and funded the development of the M 14 R. This was very powerful engine – 465 hp, but the development had been rushed and, finally, there were not very reliable. But separately VMP had its own design bureau (interestingly run by the son of Anatoly Bakanov, the designer at Vedenyev), and Sukhoi who had fallen out with Vedenyev wanted a more powerful engine and asked VMP to design it which they did in the form of the M9F.
Again a powerful engine, but still with many problems including very high oil consumption and an appetite for sparking plugs.
But nothing is being manufactured today!

Hello Jan,
Yes of course – I'm sure that all the historic issues have now been sorted out. Indeed it is still our intention to make new M 14 R engines – but we are so busy doing ordinary business!
With best wishes
Richard

Thanks Richard!
About the reliability of the M14R, there are solutions as you know very well

Jan

Although the last serial production M 14 P was made in 1994, the Voronezh Manufacturing Plant continued to make small numbers of "new" engines from existing parts, and inevitably using some overhauled parts. And of course Jim Wickersham bought (I believe) 150 totally new engines and slowly fed them onto the market until about 15 years ago, so inevitably some of those engines are sitting at the back of people's hangers!

Walt,
0 since new???????????????
Or do you mean 0 since overhaul / repair?
I though all the truly new 0 time engines were long gone.
