Hi all I’m new to this forum and if all goes well I hope to be a new owner of a KIS Cruiser in the near future. Was wondering if someone out there has a checklist for a conditioning inspection on the cruiser so we can use it for a prepurchase inspection.

Welcome to the forum,
On our web page ( www.puertoricoflyer.com), click on the photo of our airplane and at the bottom left you will find the POH I made up. Section #7 covers what I use as a condition inspection which is based on FAR 43, appendix D.

You can also get the "official" FAA requirements for a condition inspection at:

Brian,

With an EAB there is not only the "condition" inspection but also build quality inspection. While a regular A&P and IA can check the engine, prop, etc they may not have the needed background to inspect the build. This is especially important with composite aircraft.

Have the build manual and build records in hand to make sure everything was done correctly on the actual aircraft. I there are changes from the manual (there will always be some) make sure they were properly thought out and engineered if needed. I have seen many modifications and some are great but others not so much and some are unsafe. Even if the aircraft has flown for a thousand hours this is not proof that the build was safe or correct.

With the TR4 the two main problem areas are the main gear attachment and the nose gear. Look extra carefully at the flaps and controls. Look at all the secondary layups that you can and check for good bonding, workmanship and feathered edges. If you can put a fingernail under the edges of the layup there could be issues. Be very worried about fuel leaks. If auto fuel was ever used be very concerned. Use a USB bore scope to inspect areas that are hard to see.

In general, everything can be fixed but somethings are harder and more expensive to fix correctly than others.

You bring up some very valid points and I'll be keeping them in mind while performing the final prepurchase inspection. I have never heard anything regarding auto fuel having a detrimental affect on composite integrity. What is the concern here?

The alcohol in auto fuel can compromise the fuel tanks and some parts of the fuel system of aircraft. There’s also some issues with how alcohol can interact with water.

Auto fuel contains Ethanol, which is basically a solvent. If the fuel system (to include the fuel tanks) are not built to withstand the Ethanol, it will slowly dissolve the fuel system causing a major failure. Our KIS4's use the "wet wing" method of fuel tanks so if Auto gas with Ethanol has been used there may be an issue hence the borescope inspection suggestion.

FWIW: Mark K. was one of the original engineers that worked on the KIS design and is an encyclopedia of knowledge about the KIS line of airplanes. We are so lucky to have him actively participate on this forum

Ethanol and to a lesser extent MBTE will destroy the epoxy resin. Keep in mind that one side of the fuel tank is the main wing spar and it is built with epoxy resin. There was at least one KIS TR-1 that had the main spar highly compromised by auto fuel use.
