|

Hi All,
Some of you know in the community that I'm moving house and moving quite far, as a result I'm going not going to have my "Workshop Buddy" who helps me rig and de-rig the aircraft during maintenance close-by anymore. So, I'll be rigging, de-rigging and working on the aircraft alone.
I'm looking for a solution to assist me rigging and de-rigging the wings alone, and I know there are loads and loads of different solutions out there.
Can anyone help with suggestions for, and possibly sources to purchase, a rig for the Europa Monowheel, which could be used while the aircraft is on the trailer. The trailer is a standard Europa Aircraft open trailer, with no modifications.
Thanks all,
Jon

Hi Italian Jon, UK Jon here...! I solo-rig mine every time from a standard factory open trailer using a glider-style rigging aid/ trolley. The wing carrier on the trolley is pivoted to rotate the wing from the vertical to horizontal & VV. I lift the wing tip out of the trailer cradle into the trolley then wheel the wing around holding the spar end. When the wing is horizontal I stand to the rear of the spar and hold it with one hand on the spar and the other hand on the rear edge of the flap. Nice and stable to manage. I slide the spar into the fuselage using the spar guides for it to run along. I move the wing in as far as possible then go to the tip to push it fully home.

Hi UK Jon, technically speaking I should be ItalobritJon or BrititaloJon but that's a digression, a long story and one for a beer at a fly-in.
It seems that you have solved my exact problem.
Would you be able to let me know where you got your jig from? Supplier, model, etc?
Many thanks
Jon

Hi ItaloBritJon! Sorry, I don’t think mine is any recognised make, it has a very “home made” look about it. I bought it about 17 years ago from a gliding friend who’d hurt his back and he’d bought it to help him rig his glider. His back got better and he didn’t need it any more.
However, historically many people do use such devices in gliding (I’m not involved in that any more) and also I’m think that there are probably a few other Europa owners who have similar arrangements. There may be gliding suppliers who sell them and they do occasionally crop up secondhand. As an example, below is a screenshot picture of one I saw advertised recently (dated Tuesday 3rd March) on the advert section of the gliding website www.gliderpilot.net.
All the best, UKJon.

I use a Jütte rigging aid from Austria http://www.airport-data.com/aircraft/PH-ZTI.html
It's about 1300 EUR I think.
