|
|
I'd like to replace the carb and fuel pump membranes and I'd like to make sure I have everything I need before I begin.
I assume it would be helpful to drain the system fuel before replacing these?
Will the replacement of either require additional gaskets?
I assume no sealant used on the membranes?
One of the fuel pump membranes is under the bottom cap (as seen on the engine). Where does the second one go?
Does anything need to be done after replacing other than pumping the system to normal pressure and checking for leaks?
Thanks!

Not necessary. Shut the fuel off at the fuel shut off in the cockpit.
That's all you need to do. You'll get a small amount of fuel leakage
from the carb and pump. But nothing significant.
No additional gaskets. And heaven forbid! DO NOT put any type of
sealant on the covers.
Where did you see a second fuel pump membrane/diaphragm? Please share
that with me/us.
Nothing else other than what you've stated needs to be done.

Dennis, thank you so much and you are correct. The second membrane I have that looks similar to the fuel pump is actually for the carburetor. This one doesn't look very easy to replace with the carb installed...

The membrane also seals the carb cover. Its a flat piece of rubber with cotton net inside.
Install it without any stress on the screw holes. Flat and even. Watch for the "hook" when installing/removing it.

Yes, you do reuse nuts&washers which are in the old membrane. You need a new cotter pin.
The case cover might be a bit hard (sticky) to remove, pry it only a little. You need to unhook it from the rest before you can remove it.
Remember the orientation of the hook assembly. The membrane has plenty of holes, make sure is the right side when installing.
Securing everything with safety wire afterwards is a bit tight & challenging.
I have never seen the second membrane in the carb. Had the carb of my second Yak O/H at Termikas (was clogged), they told me that there are 2 membranes.

Thank you. I will pay attention as I take the covers off. I will re use the hook on the old membrane etc.
I will be taking my carb off making it easier to safety wire things. The top membrane can not be changed with the carb on the plane.
I have attached a photo showing the position of both membranes.
Thanks you again for the info. 👍

I forgot to give credit for the attached photo.
The photo was sent out by Richard Goode showing the position and what needs to be removed for each membrane.
Thank you Richard. 👍

The accelerator pump membrane (carb top) is the one I was confused about and I do agree that it doesn't look like it can be replaced while the carb is installed. Richard seems to think otherwise though.

The only way that I see that would be possible is if the nuts were removed and the studs removed. Slide the top off. ?
Maybe. ?
Open for an education.
Has anyone done this before ?

Richard confirmed that the carburetor has to be removed.

Thank you for the confirmation.
It was my plan to remove the carb to make sure everything was done as easily as possible.
I didn’t want to damage the membranes.
I plan to take many photos of the process.
Thank you again.
