I don't know if they have changed their procedure.   But mine came in a 15 - 16 inch diameter  cardboard tube 3/8  inch thick  maybe more

I don't know how spars are shipped now but when I got mine 25 years ago they were shipped standard freight in the cardboard tubes like Boyd talked about. My son watched the driver throw the (Warning Fragile!) spars out of the truck. My spars were dented but usable by locating the dents in low stress areas. My fuselage cage was crushed by what looked like forklift tire tracks. I refused delivery of the 1st cage.

I just received a reply from Kolb about shipping main and wing spars. It turns out they will not ship them. Helen said they no longer trust shipping companies (I can understand that) but that they will drive and meet me half way for $1 per mile, charge both ways, so that would mean about $1,340 to them plus about the same again for me to rent a truck to meet them.

That puts delivery costs so high that I guess I will have no forget buying and building a Fire Fly.

I am going to do some looking around locally to see if I can come up with a reasonable alternative but living in a small mountain town options are limited

Maybe try something like uship.com?  There's definitely some custom carriers (usually small guys with a pickup and trailer) that will do specialized shipping - boats, motorcycles, etc that are delicate and high value.
Around here I'd talk to a custom furniture hauler, they've got enclosed trailers and lots of blankets to wrap everything in

Kolb shipped my quick build kit on a private company called Partain. It
was well padded and strapped to the trailer. There was a classic restored
pickup in the back end. I got the whole thing for about the same amount.

If you are willing to wait until they have a shipment going nearby or
through your area you could save a lot of money.

Thinking back to the 80's I worked in an automobile parts department. Even
back then freight claims took up a lot of my time. Body parts were
particularly vulnerable. I had a cast iron exhaust manifold delivered last
week that looked like it had been air dropped rather than ground delivered.
Sad

Another option you might consider is a one way trailer rental from London,
KY. Depending on the supply situation, you might get a really good deal if
you live where they are experiencing a shortage.

Don't give up, there is always a way.

Stuart

Stuart beat me to it; Partain is the company a lot of RV guys use for
kits, and even partially complete projects when they change hands. My
understanding is that they don't crate the components; they just pad
everything well and strap it in.

For that kind of money, if it weren't for Covid I'd seriously consider a
little retirement business. Get to see the country on somebody else's
dime. Wink

If getting the spars to you is to costly...   Different options may be to try another source, ie. Aircraft spruce..  check on insurance so you can have the parts replaced if damaged...   There is a new show in our area  "shipping wars"   where private shippers bid on delivery cost.  Have the spars custom packed.   2x6 on sides and ends with plywood top and bottom. With voids filled with packing peanuts.

I ordered my parts in 1998.   The spars came undamaged,,,  another box was smashed in 99.    It took a while to get the shipping company to issue a check,   but they finally paid for all the damaged parts.
Good luck

Thank you guys for the ideas. I am in the process of contacting Partain now to see what might be possible.

When the RV-12 wing kit from Vans arrived there were two fork lift holes through the side of a substantial wooden crate.. Somehow nothing was damaged - a real miracle.

Oh, Ducatti SS - thank you for the offer...no, I want the entire Fir Fly kit.
I have asked Kolb if they would deliver it to me in central Colorado for the same price as they had offered to drive and meet me half way with the spars only.

We will see what the say .. I hope I hear from them soon.

Your offer was kind and I appreciate it.

John
