Hi Group We have a Garmin GA35 GPS / WAAS antenna that needs installing for ADS-B Garmin GDL-82. We want to install it about 2 feet aft of doors under ceiling. Has anyone put a GPS antenna there? Any pics? What size and shape ground plane did you use? Garmin is calling for a ground plane to extend 7.5" from the edge of antenna all around which will make it an approx. 19" circle. Thx. Ron P.

Normally a GPS antenna does not need a ground plane.   It's part of the

antenna.   I'm guessing they are calling it a ground plane when it's just

shielding RF from the transponder or com radio.  I installed the EchoUAT in

my plane which uses a GPS with integral antenna.  I just mounted it on a

piece of aluminum the width of the GPS and bent in an L shape and bolted to

the top of the back bulkhead.  I'm getting a good GPS signal in my plane in

the basement.....

Hi Bill The Garmin GA 35 is an active antenna and requires a ground plane that extends 7.5" off the edge of the antenna. Somehow 5vdc gets put in and being active it amplifies signal. I spoke to Garmin and Steinair and both said it's necessary. Comant antenna does not need a ground plane. Ron P.

Ron, I have a GA35 antenna for my G3X touch system with GPS20A and GTX45R. The installation instructions at the time (Rev B) made no mention of a ground plate and mine is installed at head level between the doors on a ply panel filling that recess with no form of ground plate. It has worked perfectly with all tests OK. I note that in the current Rev F instructions it does not say a ground plane is necessary, simply something like &lsquo;for best results a ground plane is advisable.&rsquo;  It would not be too difficult putting a ground plane in that space although it would not be as wide as recommended but I see no reason to do so in the light of my experience. Ron, As a P.S. I should say that my GA35 is in the over head space along with an antenna for my back up GPS496 because I have my nav aerial at the top of the tunnel just behind the D panel and my transponder antenna attached to the bottom of the tail weight tower and of course the radio antenna in the tail fin. That plan hoped to spread them out optimally and it has worked very satisfactorily. David

Ditto everything that David said in regard to the GA35 and mounting between doors.    

Mine is an early version c 2002, outputs NMEA (so not just an antenna) and only 9 channels.    

However, I have found it to occasionally drop in steep turns; maybe it just doesn't like turning.

Our GPS antenna (GNS 430) is mounted on a aluminum plate which is attached to the top of the fuselage aft of the baggage bulkhead.  I think it is about 12" diameter and I just used wood spacers about 2"-3" long bonded to the fiberglas.



The main reason for posting is that we had a lot of difficulity finding a place for our magnetometer that isnt affected by RF from the comm antenna (dipole on vertical fin per the manual).  The place that finally worked is overhead between the doors.  Even there we had to use ferrite beads on the wires.  I wanted to alert you to this potential problem before you mount your GPS antenna there.

Ron,

This is an early GRT EFIS magnetometer that has two 3 wire shielded cables.  I put ferrites on both wires.



GRT recommends placing the magnetometer in the wing tip.  But since I anticipated using both sets of wings, I did not want to have to recalibrate the magnetometer when switching wings, hence the interior placement overhead.
