I am going to change the drain plug on the oil tank to a Saf-Air type. I think the thread size is 3/8. Can anyone confirm the size?
Thank you

You sure? I thought the ROTAX stuff was metric.
I have torque settings table from ConAir and the Oil Tank Drain Plug is shown as an M12 bolt with a torque setting of 25Nm.

Hi Alan. I am not sure of the size. You may very well be right but I have to
be 100% sure before ordering.
Thank you for your advice

Have a look at the Rotax Parts Manual. Page 79-20-00 page 3
IPC_912_914 Series_ED4_R3.pdf
It lists the drain plug as M12x12
I agree you need to be 100% so worth doing the research.

Hi Martin I have one from Lockwood: https://lockwood.aero/oil-drain-valve-for-912-oil-tank-certified.html I'm not sure if I'm going to use it. Is it really that much of a hassle to remove the drain plug and re-safety? Ron P.

FWIW, Kevin Dilks (UK Rotax guru) recommends not using a drain valve.
Using the drain plug allows the oil to flow freely, thus taking any particles out with it.
Good advice, I think...

Thank you all for the advice.
Good point made by Kevin Dilks re free flow of oil. I have fitted this type of drain valve to other aircraft and it does make an oil change much less messy. I have always worked on the premise that the easier a job is to complete the better. The less they will be put off to a later date.

Just to confirm. For the Europa oil tank the Saf-air oil drain part number:
M12175 [12mm x 1.75] This information sent to me by Saf-Air

A word of caution here: Rotax made a modification of the oil tank. The flat bulkhead at the bottom of the tank is now curved and therefore prevents the Saf-Air quick drain to be locked in the open position. See attached drawings from the Rotax IPCs. The new bulkhead was introduced somewhere between 2016 and 2018. Surprisingly, the old bulkhead does not fit into the new tank. I do not know if Saf-Air has designed a new quick drain for the new tank.

Very good point Remi.
I have a pre 2016 tank so it should not be a problem 🤞
I think this thread illustrates how useful this site is for harvesting people’s knowledge. On the face of it, a simple item to fit has implications.
