Alan,
Congratulations on a job well done.
The birth of an airplane, stirs many emotions. Relief, joy, anticipation, doubt, and pride.
What makes an airplane meet all your expectations is attention to detail, confidence in your ground testing and your flight preparation.
Best Regards,

Ron, No wheels on wingtips yet, only fixed outriggers.
I am thinking of fitting some wingtip wheels, to allow retraction of the outriggers thus reducing drag, but not for now.

Hi Alan Thank you for reply, I saw a pic and assumed it was your bird. Ian is the pic your bird? If yes, why the small wheels on wingtips? Ron P.

Ian and I are both glider pilots and go for min drag, both Ian and I went for a wheel at the spar extension but he being ahead of me discovered that, with the outrigger retracted, the aileron drags on the ground. Ian has used a wingtip wheel from a Ventus glider, mounted further aft.

Hi Alan Does Ian retract outriggers manually and use a wing runner to launch? What's estimated performance increase retracted? Thx. Ron P.

Ian does use a wing runner with retracted outriggers, I am uncertain of performance increase, I will ask him.
Ian also flies an Argus, self launching glider with wingtip wheels, I used to fly such an aircraft, wingtip runners is the norm.
Regards to all for the new year.

Hi,
I have used a wing tip holder (a person) with the O/Rs removed when operating from grass (as per a normal glider), however on hard surfaces, although there is still not much clearance between the ground and the down going aileron, I used the wing tip wheel and the wing lifts straight away, as the A/C accelerates quickly, much sooner than on my Arcus M self-launching glider with its limited power to weight ratio. I have done quite a lot of gliding but have not measured the performance gained with the O/R wheels removed. With prop feathered, U/C retracted, O/Rs and tip wheels fitted at 55 knots IAS the glide is about 22.8:1, rate of sink 240 ft/m. There is a rapid increase in sink below 52 knots, so although it will fly down to the 42 knots (stall) the min sink just increases, so there is no point in flying too slowly unless the thermal is good with a very small core. The main concern while gliding is to total lack of visibility, when flying from the left-hand seat, into a right hand turn due to the mounting bar for the cockpit doors. If anybody knows of a bubble canopy installation on a Europa, I would be very interested? Still days in the UK are very rare, my ASI and PE errors were within a few knots, but the figures are as observed and not been corrected for ISA standards. The cowling radiator hole need blocking up and all the leaks around the main U/C wheel and wing fairings need sorting as well as working wing tips rather than what Don did just to reduce to wing bending moment. It would then get to the advertised 25:1 or better?
Regards
Ian Cook
