Does anyone know what the best material is to use for a cushion in the XS to give me a better view over the nose?
Also if anyone could give me dimensions (width x depth) for the pilot's seat cushion as I don't have access to my own aircraft till the end of July.

Thanks in advance
James

Hi James,
Have a search for confor foam. I have just received some from Wings and Wheels in the US and very happy with their service and price.
They offer standard size of 400 x 450 x 12.5 or 25mm in different density's which fits in the XS seat pan. Everyone will be different but I used 12.5 of green, 25 of blue and 12.5 of pink and that suits me.

cheers Peter

Thanks for that info Peter.
Are you saying that your cushion has a total thickness of 50mm?
Regards
James

Hi James,

Yes, I believe that is what Peter is saying. 50mm total thickness, which BTW is what I have as well. I am 6’1” and anything thicker resulted in my head contacting the top of the door. My wife who is 5’8” has three 25mm foam sheets, one green, one blue, and one pink for a total thickness of 75mm, which works well for her.

Regards,
Erich

Yes James, exactly as Erich has said but bear in mind I have a piece of thin ply as a base sitting on top of the control tube cover.

Cheers Peter

Just to add one more bit…I’m 6’-1”, and my seat cushions are made up of 25mm green foam, 25mm blue foam, plus triangular wedges of furniture foam for thigh supports…I find the wedges to enhance comfort significantly,,,

One note of caution - Impact foam is quite heavy. I think it is a great safety feature and worth having in any aircraft. It probably let my friend get away with a non displaced vertebral fracture instead of a paralysis when he had a very heavy crash landing destroying the plane, but it doesn’t need fully sculpted seats. A couple of layers of denser foam in the seat well could be covered with removable cushions made of lighter material and be more readily adjustable for differing pilots/passengers, saving quite a few pounds.
