You will need to check your landing gear actuators.  One of them most likely 

is leaking.  First try using the rear gear selector.  Make sure BOTH slide 

locks are to the right just to be safe.  In the following order; turn off 

the main air valve; put the rear gear handle in the DOWN position; put the 

front gear handle in the NEUTRAL position; turn on the main air valve and 

see if you still hear the leak.  My bet is you will.  If yes, turn off the 

main air valve; put the FRONT gear handle DOWN and then put the REAR gear 

handle in NEUTRAL (in other words, back to normal).  Since the gear is down 

and you hear the leak through the gear handle you should be able to 

check/find which actuator is leaking by removing the flexible line on the UP 

side of the actuator.  The up side is the easy one to get to because it is 

at the bottom end of the actuator where the shaft comes out.  The flexible 

line is connected to the a 90 degree elbow.



With the front gear handle in the DOWN position, remove the UP side flexible 

line, then turn on the main air valve.  Put your finger over the hole on the 

90 degree elbow.  If the actuator is leaking you will feel the air coming 

out of the elbow.  The air is leaking from the DOWN side (connections at 

shuttle valve) past the internal seals and out the UP side which flows back 

through and exhausts through the gear handle.  In normal operation that's 

why you hear the "hiss" when you move the gear handle from DOWN to UP and UP 

to DOWN.  The opposite side pressure in the actuator has to exhaust 

somewhere and that is through the gear handle.  Hopefully this makes sense.

The big trick is having the correct tool to remove the end caps.  I have all

the o/h parts for the main and nose actuators of the CJ6, but do not know

about interchangeability with the 52.  Let me know if I can help.

They are not difficult to physically replace.  But reassembling the actuator 

for the first time is always a challenge.  I'd recommend you ship them off 

to Carl and Jill Hays in Kingman, AZ  and have them overhaul the bad one or 

give it to someone who is familiar with disassembly and reassembly.  Carl 

and Jill have the actuator seal kits.  928-681-4400

only in the down position that you can tell?  I had a bad seal in the nose

piston that gave that scenario, my leak would stop if neutral was selected.

lucky for me the steel balls held the gear down every time. I suppose a bad

seal in any of the pistons would do it.

Nope!  Since this is your first time disassembling them, once you get the 

shaft out of the cylinder, take a couple of good photos as you proceed with 

the removal of the seals etc. so you know precisely how it goes back 

together.  Just a suggestion.

Mark,

When you felt the air leaking out the elbow you should have just bit the 

bullet and pulled the actuator and overhauled it.  The problem will not 

disappear and you may be in for a real problem if the landing gear does not 

fully extend to down and locked.  Far more expensive and time consuming than 

overhauling an actuator.

Flir,

Most of us put the machine oil in the main and Aux air tank when we take

the tank off to dry it out/drain it during our annuals. If it is at the 5

yr time frame then the tanks are sent for hydro testing. With the actuators

off, you can instill machine oil in the cylinders but that only helps the

individual unit mainly. 

I am not the expert on this, but Dennis, Doug Sapp, Carl Hayes, and Cliff

Coy to name a few here are the maintance garu's! I learn by watch

Dennis...sometimes not to well. 

Hope that helps some. By the way, does the me262pilot in your email address

mean that you also fly the Messerschmitt 262 or  Me to sick to pilot? Heey

the system by shooting it in with the scuba set up. I will assume that oil

needs to be shot into both fittings (top and bottom) for this to be

achieved. Is this correct? I planned on resealing both cylinders anyway but

was more concerned with getting the oil there to keep from trashing the new

seals. Apparently sitting damages the seals. Hopefully the cylinders are

not built like the rest of the plane. LOL

You can add oil to both sides of the actuators by removing the both the UP 

and DOWN flexible lines and putting machine oil in the flexible line and 

refitting it to the actuator.
