Oshkosh Week. Post what you see and do.
As I write this, Flightawware shows that Erich and Fred (N28ET) are about to land.
We are planning to arrive Sunday, weather permitting.
Forecast is for heavy rain at Oshkosh Saturday night, perhaps 1 inch!
We're looking forward to seeing many of you at the forum Tuesday morning.

Btw, my europa cooler is back in its regular spot by the tower gate. Grab a cool refreshment, some shade, and sign the board if you need a respite from this stinker of a hot week!
Cheers,

Unfortunately I am doing nothing with my Europa this week. Instead, I am stranded in Rockhampton Queensland with a caravan and broken down vehicle.
Whilst I wait only 12 days for a part to come from Melbourne Victoria, (12 days is not a typo) I followed Erich and Fred in N28ET from Las Vegas until they shut down in Oshkosh. If you have never seen somebody green with envy then you haven’t seen me.
Jim and others flying Europas to Oshkosh, could you kindly let me know your Regos, place and ETD (pref in UTC) in order that I can track you too. Hopefully this will help me remain sane between now and Tuesday when the part is due to arrive.
I’d love to be with you all at Oshkosh but unfortunately, it can only be there in spirit this year.
Y’all have a great time.
Kingsley in Oz.
Do not archive.

Kingsley,
We are N241BW, departing K2C5 hopefully 24 July around 1500Z - 2000Z.
John Wigney is enroute. He appears to be in Peoria, IL tonight. He is N262WF. Looks like he has had a tough day with the storms.
Sorry you are stranded but at least your weather looks OK.
Stay green!

Sunday we flew to Oshkosh, a normal 2 hour trip that took over 4 hours. Our departure was IFR until we descended to 2000 ft MSL under a broken layer over Wisconsin. We stopped at Hartford (KHXF) to top up with fuel as there were already many planes in the arrival sequence, even before the first waypoint. We got part way in the arrival when the airport was closed due to a couple of landing incidents (gusty cross winds), so we diverted to Dodge City (KUNU) and waited a couple of hours. We then joined the arrival about 15 miles from the first waypoint and proceeded inbound. While on downwind over the airport, we were told there was safety equipment on the runway and to just stay in the pattern with 3 other aircraft. We did 4 circuits and were finally cleared to land. We landed with the same amount of fuel as we had added at Hartford! The photos are over Lake Michigan and traffic on the arrival.
There were 21 people at the Europa forum with 4 from the UK and 2 from NZ. This is the biggest attendance ever! Everyone introduced themselves and their project. We talked about a fly in at Rough River, the recent club survey, ethanol fuel and Erich Trombley described his new E-Prop’s design and his initial evaluation. Many walked to where the three monowheels (Trombley, John Wigney and us) were parked to examine and ask questions, especially of Erich!

Hi Jim,Great photos and what an amazing turn out to the meeting. Well done. Great to see 2 Kiwis there too! Jealous and very envious.
Cold down here in New Zealand with flooding in Christchurch, again!
Have a safe trip home.

Really cool and thanks for the updates and pics.
Jim, how were the winds when you finally landed at KOSH. How did the mono behaved?
And Erich, when you have time, can you share your experience with the E-Props? I am using the DUC and very happy with it, in particular cruise performance, but it does load the engine a little from 60 to 100 knots. Curious to see how your E-props behaves.

Chris,
When we got to OSH I think the winds had died a little and were no problem. I made a terrible landing at KUNU after a beautiful landing at KHXF in gusty winds. I think a combination of gusty winds, tired from the stress of the arrival, having to divert because of runway closure and although not noted in the airport data, I swear the runway slopes downhill.
The mono handled it all well. I find most winds not much problem. Crab into the wind and straighten just before touchdown. Having the outriggers set high helps with this.

Wow, what a week it was! As most of you know Fred Klein and I flew N28ET from Las Vegas to Oshkosh and back. Round trip was approximately 3,100 sm burning 98 gallons of fuel, taking 20 hrs block to block. Of course this doesn’t take into account the various ground delays, extended taxi time at KOSH, weather rerouting and strong headwinds that prevailed. Still, this works out to an average ground speed of 155 mph, and a fuel economy of 32 mpg.
With two tents, two sleeping bags, two air mattress, laptop, iPad, clothes, tools, and spare parts we were a bit on the heavy side. While in the planning stage I consulted with Jim Butcher who advised me to limited the aft cg to 61.5”. This required some creative packing to get the cg just right.
Other than a longer than normal ground roll for takeoff the plane perform as usual. The Rotax 914 is a wonderful engine perfectly suited for the Europa.
A good portion of the trip was flown in the high teens. However, crossing the Rocky Mountains on the return required us to climb up 18,000 ft msl (20,000 ft DA) to remain clear of the convective buildups that we’re forming at an alarming rate.
Our last leg from KVEL required the largest weather deviation in order to remain clear of the convective front which was several hundred mile long.
All in all, it was a fantastic trip and N28ET did not disappoint to bring a smile to our faces as we crisscrossed the USA.
I would like to give a special shout out to Jim and Heather for coordinating the Europa Forum and to Pete Z. for his hospitality (especially the NEXT beer, haha) and rescuing me when my tent collapsed due to 60mph winds.
Blue skies,
Erich Trombley

Last week I installed a new throttle system, different from the stock set-up & I think better. It's a McFarlane cable assembly with cockpit adjustable tension lever. Thx to Bud Yearly for his helpful document on throttle ideas, I still his adjustable lever idea & idle stop but made one other change. I made two aluminum washers shaped like the throttle box so that can't rotate this makes it feel and work better. I found that larger friction washers worked better too but we're hard to source so I made 1 1/4" phenolic washers with a hole saw.
The throttle lever pivot arc rises and falls causing the cable piston/rod end assembly to rise and fall too. I slotted the box to allow for this movement without jamming.
This requires a seal to keep it clean in operation. Contact cement and the finger of a latex glove did the trick.
The cable run is short and direct, no bends greater than 45 deg. Friction is very low and McFarlane supply throttle springs 50% reduced tension. The 100% & 115% stop will be on the top plate later.. It is a very sweet set-up and is so smooth.

Her are a few photos of the McFarlane throttle cable system, note the color coded springs red for Port blue on starboard, the lower tension springs feel perfect!

Thx Area 51, you may be right about the lack of Mil-spec number, also couldn't find a dish washing glove with a valid TSO number either.
Just gonna call it finger tip evaluation for benefit of the aerospace industry
