Does anyone know what grease is used on the Arplast PV50 propeller hub? I've had a look through the manual but cant find anything.

Hi Matt,
No there is nothing recommended in the manual but I have always used a water
resistant grease which is more usually recommended for outboard motors.
Trouble is that if you are not careful rain water can run down up pointing
bldes mand get into the hub and cause corrosion of the main blade thrust
bearings. Water tolerant grease tends to ease this problem. I am afraid
that Arplast were never very good at maintenance practices!!

I've had the aircraft a few years now. I've kept it inside for that time. But I dont know what happened before that. Its about time I had the hub apart and give it a good looking at.

Hi Matt,   I use JCB special HP GREASE  high performance lithium complex
extreme pressure grease part no 4003/2017  This grease is blue as the
original and seems to fit the job. I live next door to a John Deere
agent so it is handy for me to obtain!  I use the Quicksilver Marine
Lubricants 2-4-C  Extremely water resistant grease for the outrigger
wheels and tailwheel bearings. This could also be used in the PV50 hub
or some other marine grease as Peter says.

You will probably be dismantling your hub anyway to set up the
mechanical fine stop? LAA require a check of the static rpm and a
mechanical fine stop setting to prevent over revving.

It is also worth considering new bearings.They are standard items,cheap
and can be obtained from Bearing Boys or Simply Bearings.

Sorry I was getting a bit confused with your 2 emails. One talking about an
Arplast PV 50 and the other about a prop strike, although it seems not to
have referred to the same prop in each instance.

Re Arplast PV50 bearings. Which ones are you talking about. Are you
talking about the main blade root bearings or the little bearing that the
pitch change lead screw runs in? Both are available from your local bearing
suppliers and are not too expensive. I used to get them from a company
called Bearing Traders.
If you intend to change the large blade root bearings please note that this
involves removal of the blade drive dog and subsequent resetting of same
when re assembling. You will need to make a jig to locate the dog correctly
before reassembly. We used to need to send back to manufacturers in France
to carry out this job correctly but they are not in business now so you will
have to do it yourself. If you get this wrong you will end up with each
blade at a different pitch. Not good. You will also have to reset the fine
and coarse limit switches. Once more not a happy job, but doable with
patience.
All this is why I now have a Woodcomp propeller.

Hi Pete,
I've already replaced the bearings on the lead screw when I replaced the pitch change motor and gearbox. So will be looking to replace the root bearings. There is one blade with some slight play in it. So a new bearing might resolve this.
I did the limit switches last year. Wasn't hard to do. Just time consuming. I'm trying to keep the prop going as long as possible to honest. The cost of replacing it is fairly high and I don't want to fit a fixed pitch.
I'm trying to order as many parts before I start work on the aircraft. Want to get as much done in the least amount of time

Hi Matt,       Arplast PV50 bearings. My last replacements were from
---www.simplybearings.co.uk----

3 off   MB.5040.DLU---Wrapped steel plain bearing bush 50x55x40mm

3off  51110.MB ----thrust ball bearing 50x70x14mm

2off   3x5o.NBR- pack of 2-----3section x50mmbore NITRILE 70 0-rings

Simply have a good website and do a quick delivery.

This is how I service my PV50.-

First get your inspector present! and read PV50 manual.

I have a 4ft square of 1/2 inch ply with a 2" hole cut in the centre
-screwed to a B/D workmate.

Remove propeller noting spinner and backplate alignement markings- take
photos.

Place propeller on bench with pitch change motor in hole.

Remove 6 Hub bolts, use a 9volt PP9 battery to touch on  pitch change
motor to move blades to coarse then lift off top of hub.It helps to have
another set of hands and eyes to achieve this carefully.

The blades can be lifted out if the pitch change motor has been moved
coarse enough.

Work on one blade at a time,make a simple jig from wood to hold the
blade. Mine is a piece of shelf 23"x 8"with a piece of 4x1.5" fixed
either end.Back of blade rests on one end while the bearing sits in a V
cut at the other end. At the hub end is fixed a metal bar with a hole to
locate  the bolt head of the nylon block mounting. All the blades 
should fit the jig accurately before dismantling!

Undo hub clamp and remove thrust  and plain bearing and o ring,clean and
inspect. Note centre holes of thrust bearings are different, smaller dia
centre locates on propeller shaft last.larger dia centre locates in hub.

Fit new o ring and bearings with grease.Clean loctite from clamp and
bolts. Fit blade to jig,refit clamp and tighten bolts with loctite
applied. You can keep rechecking your jig by trying the old blades in!
Repeat for blades 2 and 3 .Refit as manual,loctite on bolts at 11
lbs/ft. Don't forget to pull on blades, to seat the thrust bearings,when
tightening!

Before reassembling check the mechanical fine pitch stop.It is an
aluminium tube fitted over the screw actuator with an o ring! This is
the safety device in case of screw,switch or other failure. It's length
governs the max revs at take off in the event of one of the above. See
latest LAA info.

All above is just from memory so I may have missed some parts or they
may be in the wrong order but I hope it helps. Peter will have much more
experience of many PV50s and may wish to add to my comments?

Thought it would be helpful to add some images of the hub disassembly and bearing, bush, o ring replacement. The orange nylon block has a barely perceptible notch on the corner which the manual talks about - with trailing edge up it goes on the right as you view the blade from tip looking towards hub.

The jig is to make sure the angle stays the same. Just lay the prop tip flat and have the nylon block hard up against in this case, the flat top of the jig. Others use a notch or hole and I think this would be more precise again
