getting sharpie off Kolb factory powder coat

My kit that I am finishing has some sharpie marks from the previous owner on the powder coat from the factory. I use fine sharpies myself so I'm not critical of him. Since MEK is hard to get now (Home Depot now sells an MEK Substitute), I've tried the substitute but it smears the colored sharpie all over the powder coat but not removing it. I now have clouds of blue and red. The substitute does take it off bare aluminum but the powder coat is another story.



Has anyone found something that takes it off of the powdercoat without removing the powdercoat?

Any chance that the MEK actually attacked the powdercoat & spread the 
	


ink into it? Alcohol will remove sharpie if it's relatively new, and 

acetone and lacquer thinner (which is basically diluted acetone) will do 

a good job on it when it's a decade or more old; at least on aluminum 

(don't ask how I know).

McMaster carr will sell a quart of 99.5% MEK for $20

No idea about sharpie on powder coat exactly, but I know the MEK is easy enough to get!

Thanks for the info. I'll try lacquer thinner or acetone on the powdercoat. The sharpie marks are probably 4-6 years old. Perhaps the MEK substitute melts it into the powdercoat. Hopefully I can get it off, if not I don't want to have to paint the whole boom tube from front to back so it might just be what it is.

Most any chemical that will dissolve permanent ink will most likely 

soften the powder coat. After all it is a plastic coating.



Best bet is to wipe lightly, don't rub it in. I had a lot of difficulty 

with this and there are still some places I can see traces of sharpie 

marks.



On the same vein, be very very diligent about removing all sharpie and 

ink marks from anything that will be fabric covered. I missed a couple 

of spots and even though they didn't bleed through right away, they 

showed up later. I used the Poly-fiber process for everything.



Last I knew Lowes and Ace hardware sold pure MEK. Getting a gallon from 

ACE was a crap shoot from store to store but Lowes usually had it in 

stock. Haven't checked lately.

Try carb cleaner...  Spray a tiny bit on a paper towel.



It has cleaned permanent marker off metal,   if you are going to try on powder  coat,,,  try on a spot that won't show.

Hi Charlie,

I got out some acetone I had and tried some 4-6 year old sharpie lines on the powder coat. It took off 95% of it cleanly with just a tiny mark in one tiny spot. I then tried where I had used MEK Substitute in the past where it was cloudy red. The MEK Substitute seems to do as you described, it seems to have melted the colors into the powdercoat as the acetone did nothing for that. It appears those cloudy areas are going to be permanent.



I will try the carb cleaner on the cloudy areas but I don't have any at the moment.
