|

Two quick items I'm dealing with as I finish a new build:
I painted my plane with glossy paint. I put my velcro on the wings for the gap seal but it doesn't seem to stick very well. I tried a sample of contact cement but that didn't seem to do well either as it seems the glossy paint doesn't have "teeth" to grab into. Any ideas how to deal with that other than making the lexan hard gap seal or sanding down the paint?
My ailerons seem to have a lot of slop. Upon investigation the u-joint has slop (not from the bolt holes but the u-joint itself) and the upper control rod ends seem to have some slop too. Is this common with Kolb Firestars? Is this going to cause a flutter problem? I do have the ailerons counterweighted and balanced but I've never flown nor worked on an any plane with slop like this. It surprised me being a new build and does make me wonder if this is going to create any issues when I get to test fly.
Thanks,
Jay

Jay,
Are you using the velcro supplied by the factory? The stuff that came
with my Firefly was really sticky but didn't get really stuck until it
had quite a lot of pressure applied to it. It had been folded and the
folds didn't want to come out at first but out in the sunshine when it
warmed up a little I rubbed it all over again and it has stuck really well.
How long has your paint had to cure? Don't know if that matters but
something to think about anyway.
Does the universal joint look like the one in the picture? If it does,
and it has any play in it, I would replace it. Same with the rod ends on
the tubes, mine had no perceivable slop when new except between the bolt
and the eye but that was a very small amount.
I don't know how the joint is constructed under the red seal but was
impressed with it and was told it would outlast the plane. The plans
still showed how to make the torque tube joint with bolts but this is a
much better solution. Maybe you got a bad one?
