Dr. Dee and I are digging up some old
skills from back in the day when we were
offering a constellation of products.
While getting set up to stick those little
pieces of fly-crap down on a board with
itty-bitty mounting pads, I was having a
LOT of difficulties with a newer but still
temperature-controlled soldering irons.
For a time I was uttering words I didn't
even know I new!
The temperature dynamics on the tips was
just NOT yielding the solder flow characteristics
I was trying to achieve. It took some time
sifting through all the variables and
attending physics but I'll keep it short
for the purposes of this posting.
Seems like every kid and his dog wants to
get into the soldering iron business:

I have sampled (and still own) a variety of
examples for which I've discovered few performance
issues . . . they perform pretty much as
expected . . . except. When sticking surface
mount parts down with needle tips, you
need good thermal conductivity and mass
all the way down to the tip.
What I found was that MOST of the tips
laying around that fit my irons were STEEL
or perhaps steel heater sleeves with copper
tips swagged into the end.
Poking around the offerings for spare tips
one wants to look for oxygen free copper
tips. Took a magnet and culled out all the
imposters. Did find a few of the genuine
article. Made a world of difference in
solder flow.
Lesson for the day: Purchase carefully, use magnet
to confirm 100% copper construction.
I've still got my revered Metcal solder
stations but tips for those are getting
really pricey and they are not knob-adjustable
for temperature. The new kids on the block
do well if not hog-tied with lousy thermal
dynamics in the tip!
