I'm so sad to hear about Pascal and his daughter. I always enjoyed his posts. I hope we can learn something from this tragedy.

I have been sad ever since I heard the news, as well. I went through
some of my old emails and saw many that he had written, some to the list
and some to me personally. He was a good person to have in the RV-10
community. I still have the Christmas card that he sent via email
from 10 years ago. I last had an exchange with him in 2022, which
as usual was good.
I don't know what happened, exactly to cause such a thing. It's
horrible, regardless of what it was. I have heard basically 4th hand
info that perhaps he was seen struggling with an open cockpit door
after takeoff. If that is true, it's a good time to remind anyone
who still monitors this list that there is a better latch option.
The Planearound latch has been installed on many RV10's, and really
should be the standard. If the door does turn out to be the cause,
this would be the 2nd fatal accident to directly attribute to open
doors. However, there have been many more incidents non-fatal that
we've heard of over the years. So regardless of what your RV-10 is
configured with, this is a time to guide you back to being diligent
in your pre-flight inspections. And, practice your emergency procedures
regularly.
Lets hope this is not just the first RV-10 incident of 2025, but also
the last. This one brought me to literal tears yesterday.

I did the same thing when I heard. I looked up past emails from him. I got the same Christmas card.
On the door, I agree. I regularly help people into RV-10’s. My main instruction is, “be anal about the doors”. If you get complaciente about them, that’s when you will have problems. I stress the 4-5 point pre-takeoff check.
1. Make sure the button is popped out.
2. Make sure the handle won’t rotate
3. Push on the front to verify it is pinned.
4. Push on the back to verify it is pinned.
5. Verify strap is on handle, for those who have straps and/or verify the door latch LED is off.
It’s so sad to lose another RV-10er who was part of the early RV-10 journey with so many of us.
