DEDICATED TO ALL THOSE WHO FLEW BEHIND0 ROUND ENGINES
We gotta get rid of those turbines, they're ruining0 aviation and our
hearing...
A turbine is too simple minded, it0 has no mystery. The air travels
through it in a straight line and doesn't0 pick up any of the pungent
fragrance of engine oil or pilot sweat.0
Anybody can start a turbine. You just need to move a switch from0 "OFF"
to "START" and then remember to move it back to "ON" after a while.0 My
PC is harder to start.
Cranking a round engine requires skill,0 finesse and style. You have
to seduce it into starting. It's like waking up0 a horny mistress. On
some planes, the pilots aren't even allowed to do it...0
Turbines start by whining for a while, then give a lady-like poof0 and
start whining a little louder.
Round engines give0
When you start a round engine, your mind is0 engaged and you can
concentrate on the flight ahead. Starting a turbine is0 like flicking on
a ceiling fan: Useful, but, hardly exciting.0
When you have started his round engine successfully your Crew Chief0
looks up at you like he'd let you kiss his girl, too!
Turbines0 don't break or catch fire often enough, which leads to aircrew
boredom,0 complacency and inattention. A round engine at speed looks
and sounds like0 it's going to blow any minute. This helps concentrate the
mind!0
Turbines don't have enough control levers or gauges to keep a0 pilot's
attention. There's nothing to fiddle with during long flights.0
Turbines smell like a Boy Scout camp full of Coleman Lamps.0 Round
engines smell like God intended machines to smell.0

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> Bite your tongue, mister. When's the last time you started a C30-P in a0 Bell 206L-3? I've done too many hot start inspections and wrangled too many0 cases of beer from high time pilot's who've "Never hot started a turbine before." Usually 250 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico on a platform 65' above the0 water in a 40kt wind in July. Lastly, I haven't seen a recip yet that weighs 1900 lbs and produces 700 shp. Hehe! ;-P

To keep this Kolb related, my Firefly is still for sale. Email me for the0 details, or search the archive.
