All,
I'm considering buying an HGU-55 through flightsuits.com and have heard many
pro's and con's. One main one I have heard is that folks have had comm
issues with this set up. Anyone have any comments or suggestions on the
comm issue or helmets in general?

It works fine with me, including the ANR from Flightsuits.
I use their HGU55 since about 4 years and had no problems with it.
But I need to say that we don't use the standard Baklan radio but a Becker
with PM1000 intercom.
I would recommend a fixed power supply outlet though in the cockpit (front
and back) Batteries don't run very long...
anr-headsets.com have a nice solution for that.

I use Sigtronics speakers and the Sigtronics M80H microphone. The speakers
for whatever reason have much greater audio level than most others I have
used, even though all GA headset speakers are 300 ohms. The M80H mic is
designed for high noise environments. You won't be disappointed.

If you are looking for protection as well as comm, get the Kevlar option. The standard helmet provides little protection. Most Life Support shops will tell you that. They are a great place to put the comm gear and O2 mask and visor, but they are not good "helmets" in the traditional sense.
Get the Kevlar....$100.00 is worth it.
Flightsuits even claim this:
Caution: HGU-55 helmets have been designed for use in fixed-wing aircraft and offer limited impact protection. Users with different applications should consider helmets with greater impact protection designed specifically for their applications.

Scott,
I have a HGU-55 and have had no porblems with it. I have the Sigtronics
helicopter boom mike, and there warbirds earphones. I use the noise
attenuating earmuffs along with helmet liner from Oregan Aero. Have had not
real issues with this helmet.

Hi Scott,
I've used an HGU 55 in both an Su 29 and Yak 55M with Briz radios without
difficulty. In fact, it provides better noise reduction than my Lightspeed
ANR headset in the same environment. It is comfortable, relatively light and
prevents head-banging on snap-rolls. The only real down-side is that they
aren't cheap, but sometimes you get what you pay for. I like mine.

Huis,
I would like to have seen a picture of the HGU-55P in the last listing. If
I were buying one off a list, I would prefer the "new" one. A picture of
the orginal is worth a 1000 words coming from someone listing it on a list
like ebay.
Go to Google and do a Gentex search. They are the makers of the HGU series
of helmets. Tomorrow when I am out at the unit, I will ask my life support
guys if there are any gotcha's in looking for these helmets. I am lucky
since I still have access to my life support guys to help me out when I
have a problem with my helmets.

Have no personal experience - but believe they are very good - Individually

No connection etc

The ruskies used a rectangular 60 conductor connector. If your helmet has a single short stubby0 round "helicopter" plug, it's been converted. The impedance of the eastern0 speakers and mics is incompatable with US civil radios (unless they've been0 changed out). I do know how to wire the 6 connector plug to US standards,0 but there's no point.
