Gang,

There has been much discussion lately about dealing with an unknowing / unresponsive FSDO where Airworthiness Certification and Operating Limitations are involved. With the collective wisdom of this list, I am surprised that no one has suggested that THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE. Seek out the services of a Designated Airworthiness Representative (DAR)! Yes, this will cost some money, but what is your time and aggravation worth?

We are fortunate that there is a very "Red Star" friendly DAR here in New England. Among the many functions Jeff Mandeville is authorized by the FAA to perform are to issue original & recurrent Special Airworthiness Certificates in the Experimental-Exhibition Category. Some of Jeff's more recent activities have involved Yak-52, Yak 18T, L-29, L-39C, Fouga CM-170 and Pitts-S12. He is also quite familiar with my CJ-6A.

When I asked about his availability to travel, this is the e-mail response I received. "I am willing to do the certification inspections just about anywhere, however, I have to request permission from my FAA office to work outside of New England, and they are required to coordinate with the local FAA office where I am performing the inspection." He also included, "Feel free to have anyone give me a call for information, or if they have any questions having to do with any of the FAA regulations pertaining to these aircraft."

Jeff is an all-around good guy, Vietnam veteran, and is currently working towards his Private Pilot certificate, having recently soloed in his Kit Fox.  He is definitely on our side and worthy of our support. I will be meeting him for breakfast on Sunday morning, and will let him know I made this post. His contact information is as follows:

Jeffrey G. Mandeville
9 Herring Run Road
East Sandwich, MA 02537
(508) 888-8878

If anyone needs a excellent Nanchang or YAK DAR in the west it would be Ted DeSantis down in Mesa, AZ. He has done several of my CJs as well as others and really knows his business, especially the paperwork. Give him a call at: 480-924-1602 or 602-565-8706. Tell him Gary Bunn of Prescott sent you. He's a good guy to have on your side, easy to work with and fair.
