Dear Europaphiles,
I have posted a photo on the ‘Europa Owners’ website which can be found at http://www.europaowners.org/ . If you click ‘Gallery’ and then click on the Builders photo album link, you will find my photo at the bottom of the page. Title of the photo is “N262WF oil cooler - broken mounting lug” and it is taken looking from the front with the radiator removed.
Details are as follows :- - My installation is with standard factory firewall-forward XS components.
- The oil cooler is mounted below and behind the coolant radiator. It is mounted to the cooling duct with AN4-25A bolts and tubular spacer sleeves.
- At a routine inspection I found that one mounting lug was completely fractured and that the other was cracked but not broken. The crack is just visible in the photo.
- Time on the plane is 506 hours.
Discussion :- <>I am posting this note to suggest that other XS owners pay particular attention to this area. The mounting lugs are not easy to see with the radiator in place and if the cooler lug(s) break, there is the risk of the hoses chafing and a subsequent oil leak which could really spoil your day. I am having my cooler repaired and I intend to install some additional brackets between the sides of the cooling duct and the lugs to provide additional stiffness and reduce possible vibration.</>

Somewhere in the back of my mind is an instruction that if you want to lower the radiator you can (should) use a threaded bar/bolt which attaches to both the upper and lower brackets, thus giving a firmer anchor and avoiding the potential turning moment in the upper bracket which you seem to have suffered. Does this make sense? I think the paper suggested this depending on the weight/size of the radiator but it seems to be appropriate in this instance.
I've tried to find the written word without success but someone more technically minded may have the answer.

have a look at Paul McAllister's installation, he lowered the oil cooler
and made other refinements to smooth the airflow. I think there are pix
on the club website , I have them somewhere, buried in an old HDrive
that went wrong
Jim Nelson also did some mods and was able to reduce the size of his
inlet, hopefully reducing cooling drag as well as cooling well in Florida

Hi Steve,
I do not remember seeing the threaded bar/bolt suggestion but it is obviously better than my original installation where the upper supports were probably under excessive strain. Paul McAllister kindly sent me another idea which can be seen at the Sept 2003 page on his website at http://europa363.versadev.com/. This involves installing brackets from the sides of the duct to the bottom supports on the cooler. This is what I have chosen to do.
