Hi All, Eureka, I passed the S.P. practical test today and have my 

temporary airman certificate in hand. Now I need to take the Repairman LSA 

Inspection Airplane, course, and pass that test. The closest course I can 

find to me is in Fredrick Md. ( 150 miles away, I don`t have an address 

yet, just the name of the city.) If anyone can recommend a hotel or motel, 

close to where the course is being given, it would be a great help in my

  Congratulations on the test pass! Cannot help with info on the hotel issue, just offering an "ataboy" for you, on something I hope I will also someday be accomplishing.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Hi Lanny,



        Try Frederick Aviation, 800.545.9393.  Tell them you're a pilot and 

need a 'crew rate'.  Explain you're airlining in for business.  They should 

have a good range of hotels and prices at the ready.

Stephen and All, The test was brutal, we started at 9 am. and finished at 

3 pm. The oral part lasted for four hours, we took a half hour lunch break 

then flew for an hour, then a half hour of paper work. My brain was drained 

when we were finished. The examiner asked at least two guestions from each 

standard, however he was VERY fair. If my answer didn`t please him, he kept 

dragging out information from me until he was satisfied. He zeroed in on 

air space, we spent about an hour looking at a sectional map, he would 

point to something on the map, and have me tell him everything I could 

about that air space. If I said that I could not fly in a certain airspace 

with a S.P. rating, he wanted to know if I could fly under or over it. As 

it is an open book test I spent a lot of time finding the answers in the 

FAR`S. The flight test consisted of everything listed in the standards, 

once again he was very fair. Before the flight he told me the standard is 

not perfection, as long as the outcome of the maneuver was never in doubt. 

I guess that is a judgement call on his part. It is my opinion that the 

examiner can make you or break you , I was lucky to find a good one. Lanny

it sounds as though the test was pretty thorough and I am glad I shall not 

have to take it.



However, is it really a useful test if you are allowed to look up the 

answers?  In the cockpit you have to KNOW the answer, now, if say you have 

to divert and the field you need is in  controlled airspace of some sort.



It seems on the face of it  further easement of exam standards which started 

with the introduction of  multi choice answers which gave the examinee a one 

in three chance of being correct even if they had no idea at all.



What do others think?

Patt, I believe what the FAA is trying to address with the SP practical test is the level of ignorance and misinformation common in the ultralight community. From what I gather it is no more difficult than the test I took for my PPL. In the example you give, the solution is not to be fumbling about in the cockpit trying to look up FAR's, it is to plan your flight before hand, so you know the airspace into which you venture.

    It kinda all depends on what is being tested as to whether or not it 

should be open book..  It should mirror the "real world" so if the question 

asks "what does a flashing red light mean?" then you shouldn't be allowed to 

go to the book.  But if the question asks "How much time do you have to 

report an accident?" then you should since in the "real world" you'd have 

time to look it up.  I haven't taken my practical test yet - plan to within 

the next month so I'll be better able to report on the oral then.

     Yes there are.  Ted  Gillespie has passed his written and so has Rich Edgar.   A new member  is just getting started and there may be a couple more that I'm not aware  of.  Ted is poised to take his practical in the next two weeks and I plan  to take mine before the end of Sept.  Rich is totally dissilusioned by  flying and apparently isn't going any further.  There are a number of good  study aids to take the written.  Ted took the King course (I think around  $130) and liked it.  I just looked around and can't find the study aid I  took and don't remember what it was (I hate getting old) but I don't think it  cost anything.  All of the test questions are on the FAA site and you can  review them there.  I have taken a couple of lessons from H.L. down in  Marana but I'm leaving for Oregon Wednesday.  When I get back, I'm gonna  help a friend cover his MKIIIXtra and he, being a private pilot, is gonna teach  me all about navigation and reading charts and flight planning.  Then I'll  go back to H.L. and get as much training as he thinks I need to take the  practical.  There's a lot of stuff on the practical about flight planning,  navigating, turns about a point, "S" turns down a road, short field landings,  etc.

  

     The big question for you is were  you a registered pilot with any of the three organizations prior to Sept  2004?  If the answer is yes, then you've got a big advantage but that  advantage runs out Jan 31 2007.  I'll be home later this morning and you  can call if you need more info. 771-2295
