Is no one sending anything to this list anymore, or is their something wrong
with my subscription? I've not received anything for a large number of
weeks.

Jim,
The Stratus powered planes must be finally working out all the issues we've
been complaining about the past few years. As you said it's been a silent
summer so far, not the usual over heating problems being discussed. Even
mine seems to be under control this year with no hick-ups to mention.

Flew to a small fly-in last weekend at a local grass strip were some GA
planes and UL's were having breakfast. As usual the Zodiac made everyone put
down their food and come over to investigate my strange looking bird.
Doesn't take long for the usual question to arise ........ "what you got in
it for a engine?"
Once they hear the crowd grows larger begging to get a closer look. Had to
give a few rides, and everyone commented on the planes power, yet on how
smooth and quite the engine ran.

The only other Stratus in my area is Larry Mc, who has been down most of the
summer working on painting his HDS.
Hope your summer has been a fun one also,

Just a little slow lately. Maybe everyone is out flying all summer.
Mine has been running great. I improved my cooling well enough for TX,
and cleaned up after the dipstick spill. Since then it's just been nice
cruising around the area.

Hi Gary,
When you find the time can you let us know what you did to help the cooling
issues you were fighting?
Did you have to go to an oil cooler?

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> I'm glad you guys are still there. I unsubscribed from the Zenith list but kept the Stratus. Since I rededicated my life to Gof, I haven't flown as much, practicing and trying to hit that little white ball, but I was pleased this morning with my temps in the hot Texas weather. Went to a breakfast in Jefferson, Tx.

I will continue to subscribe to this list.

It has been quiet, but I did get to finally start my engine for the first
time a few weeks ago. What a rush!

Just to put something on the list, I did the first flight of my Stratus power 601HD last Tuesday and put another hour on it today. I has been hot upper 80's to 90 but I have had no problems with my cooling system. The water temperature goes to 190 and stays there. In a long full power climb out the oil temperature will just get to 260. I am impressed with the acceleration with the Suburu, at full power I am to 50 mph is a flash. So far the engine has 11.3 hours on it 10 hours testing on the ground and 1.3 in the air and it hasn't missed a beat yet.

Andy,
Congratulations. It sounds like you're getting close. Remember that
this engine is one that
you can run or tune with the prop removed. I take mine off each time I
go for a check of timing
or carb adjustments etc. Much safer. Gets the Lyc and Continental guys
excited when they see
this being done.

Nice to hear of another one in the air, congratulations. Your cooling system sounds great, have fun flying off the hours.

Kelly,

I have a custom radiator where the stock Stratus muffler is, with an
inlet duct coming from the stock Pelican cowling opening of 4" x 12"
underneath in front. The oil pan is in the way, so it penetrates the
cooling duct. I used half of the opening for the radiator duct and left
the other half open for airflow over the oil pan and exhaust. After
many attempts at making an exit duct to pull more air out (it's wide
open underneath like the zeniths) I just increased the inlet for the
radiator duct by 1". So now I have 3" x 12" for coolant and 1" x 12"
for oil. The coolant temps are solid but oil creeps up to 250 after
climbs (then I throttle back for a while and they come down). That's at
noon on 100 degree days. Anything less, and it's fine. An oil cooler
would be nice but it's ok for now. I'm still planning on a completely
new FWF when I figure that all out. Then I'll make the cooling even
better.

Thanks for the update Gary, sounds like you have things pretty well sorted
out.
If anyone is curious to see Gary's bird (and Stratus engine installation)
check it out here.....

Hope to see some updated photos of your installation soon.
Thanks for the post,

Kelly

I had a few guys tell me I was crazy for trying to start my engine without a
prop until I did it. Then all I could do was smile and say, "I told you
so."

Yea Gary, it was smooth and sounded great. I didi keep a close eye on the
temps. Since I did not have a prop on it and not much air moving across the
radiator I could only run about 14 or so minutes at a time. As soon as the
temp got to 185 I would shut it down. Hope to get to run it again before
too much longer with the prop and see how that goes.
