Listers,
There has been some recent discussions about the difficulty of installing
the main gear on the 601HD & HDS.
I remembered some ancient comments ( about ten years ago ) in the Zenair
Newsletter. I went back and looked in Issues # 91 (Nov/Dec 1995) #93
(Mar/Apr 1996) #95 (Jul/Aug 1996) and # 97 (Nov/Dec 1996).
I was the submitter of the Article in Issue # 97. I had developed a way that
I considered a lot easier and quicker, not only for the initial installation
but any time maintenance had to be performed. I made use of nutplates and
some simple aluminum strips which didn't take long to make. The initial
installation of all three gear took me 45 minutes. Chris Heintz made a
comment following the article that the Bungees last for many years,
therefore maintenance wouldn't be needed. Ask those who have had main gear
fitting failures and those who must now beef up or modify the main gear legs
of the HD and HDS. They have to fight the same battle they did at initial
installation.
My tool and the way I installed the gear will allow me to do this job
without much problem. My main bungees have lasted for 10 years just as Chris
said but I have to now beef up the gear. No cracks yet but I don't want a
failure.
Take a look at those past issues of the Newletter. Several ideas to work
with.

You poor guy! Only able to fly 27 hrs in 10 years!!! I thought I had it
bad, but all I can say is, I feel for you. I'm not doing much better. At
least, not lately.

My mistake. My thumbs must have gotten in the way of my eyes. Have 527 hours
not 27. Sorry for the error. I didn't proof read well enough.

I would have felt better if it really was 27hrs! Between work
commitments, building, and rental fees...............
