OK, I get the picture. What else can be used to prepare 6061 for primer? Jeff 601 working on wings. do not archive

Jeff:
You can get a soapy acid solution from a trucking
supply house - It is called "Pro Par Super Renews II."
You should dilute it with water. It cleans and eats
at the aluminum. I scotch-brite, use the Pro Par,
then rinse with water and dry before priming.
Compared to some parts I just scuffed up, the primer
sticks a lot better with the Pro Par treatment. A
gallon lasts forever - I'm almost finished with my
airplane and still have half of the gallon left.
I bought all of my green scotch-brite from Wal-mart.
It works great.

Just use self-etching primer... There's really no need to 'scuff' it with anything, that's what the 'self-etching' in the primer does... Just clean it really good with a solvent, I personally use MEK, but I know some others use Acetone with good results...

Jeff, since I'm priming the inside and overlapping surfaces with self-etching Zinc Oxide (from rattle cans) I feel that scuffing with sand paper or scotchbrite is a totally unnecessary exercise. Etching the metal surface produces far more bond than the scratches we could make with abrasives. I have simply cleaned the surface thoroughly with laquer thinner then sprayed the primer on. The result has been fine.
