Dear List,
I am a newbie who is shoping for a project and I am considering the XL.I ask the kit factory if aerobatics are allowed in the XL.I got a different answer from two people, one of which said mild acro is OK.I was wondering if many of you use your XL for the ocasional loop or roll.Has anyone got a straight answer from the designer on this?Thanks,

Kirk,
Pleased to see you looking at the 601 series. Excellent aircraft. The
advertised g-loading would say any positive loaded maneuvers like the
roll or loop could be
tolerated easily, but I'd not choose the 601 if aerobatics were your
primary interest. The XL wing is much thinner a section than the
previous HD and HDS. Both of these
have thick enough wing to handle loads, but are a bit slower for the
same thickness. I think everyone has done a roll or a loop once or
twice in the XL, but it's the exception
to the kind of flying intended. If you need more detail, you should
speak only to Nick at Zenith. As the principal design engineer, he would
certainly elaborate in greater detail.

I am also considering the 601XL as I compare various kit options, and thus also interested in this topic. I have no interest in "serious" acro - but an occasional roll/loop would be fun...

Not being able to would NOT be a deal breaker for me - as it isn't that critical. Conversely - if it could, it would be another entry in the positive column for this aircraft.

Please post any response you get direct from Zenith. If anyone else has info - please chime in!

I think the problem of doing some acrobatics in any airplane not designed to handle them, is very dangerours, This is my point:

The pilot has to be very good in acro... so he will not stress the aircraft.
Given this, this mild acro will not be fun for him in this airplane,

IF the pilot is not good (not proficient in acro) can make a mistake in certain manouver and over stress the plane and could brake it... This could be fatal...
Would you take the chance? Like racing the family car in the streets...

Going though some turbulence, is fun enough for me Smile

Agreed

However - I think that both of us are trying to clarify what, if any acro maneuvers the engineers feel are OK with this craft. While I don't believe that an experimental aircraft is rated as "utility" or "Acrobatic" - the designers should be able to detail the design parameters and/or limits.

The 601 series aircraft are designed for a flight load factor of 4 g
(design load factor of 6 g). Aerobatic aircraft are designed with a
flight load factor of 6 g or greater (design load factor of 9 g or
greater). Based on this, the Zodiacs are not suitable for much in the
way of aerobatic flight. But, as long as the planned maneuver has
little chance of causing more than a 4 g load on the aircraft, even
if you screw it up, you should be OK.

All these opinions about aerobatic flight in a Zodiac don't consider
the requirement for a parachute when doing aerobatics. The FARs are
quite clear on this point. Even if you wear a parachute, it will
only serve as a seat cushion since you can't get the forward hinged
canopy open in flight to get out of the plane if the wings come off.
