Dear Thread Friends, I am looking to buy a canopy cover for my XL. She stays hangered most all the time and any of you all that have visited probably have seen that fine Bart Simpson bed sheet I use to cover the canopy from dust and bugs. I do plan on doing a bit of over night traveling this fall and need a "real" canopy cover. I contacted Bruce's Custom Covers in California and the nice fellow indicated they had sold 58 covers for 601s and his price was $379.00 plus shipping. Further, he said their cover weighs a little over 6 pounds. I figure I don't really need a cover that will withstand meteor showers, hurricanes, tornados. The plane would end up in Kansas with Dorothy and Toto anyway with the cover the only thing holding it together !. Anybody know a lighter, less indestructible and cheaper source for a canopy cover ? Hope to hear from you and best regards, Bill of Georgia

Hi Bill,
I have used a guy in Florida who uses a fabric similar to Tyvec "paper
cloth" and he made two covers for the Mooney, which were a lot larger
than the 601. I will try to find his name but he lives near Lakeland
and is/was connected with aviation. The cost was less than $200 bucks.
He rates the lifespan as 2 to 3 years outside. Our's lasted longer. I
have shreds of my last one that may have his name on it. Somebody on
the list might know his name.
I also inherited a cover from a fellow who had the bad luck to be
flying his HDS when his motor ate a valve and put him down off field.
He was fine but the plane was totaled and he gave me his canopy cover.
You are more than welcome to borrow it to see if it fits and send it to
a shop that needs a pattern.

Bill,
I think the real canopy cover at $379.00 was a bargain. It has a
material inside that will protect your acrylic from abrasion, the
outside is silver and will repel the ultraviolet rays better than most
anything else. The temps stay down because the cover does reflect light
well. He puts your n-number on each side of the cover so it won't get
legs when you visit another place and the straps that go under the belly
have real nice connectors, all of which goes into a rather small bag
that will fit just behind the pilots seat without upsetting your CG.
The design is a good fitting cover that I find very easy to use even
when the plane is to set a few weeks in the hangar with snow blowing
around and bird droppings spray wash off it without any damage. It
probably does weigh near 6-lbs bag and all but that's not much for what
you get nor much of a dent in your
payload. I've had mine for about 3 years now and it is preferred to the
fuzzy mattress cover that I used during construction of the plane. I'd
be an advocate for changing
your mind as the canopy cover is a really nice well thought out piece of
gear specifically fitting the 601.

But it's your decision and I have to respect that Smile .

Ron, you are the luckiest guy I know. If I knew a fellow whose plane was bent he would probably want me to loan him some money. You, get a free canopy cover. Must be all those years of clean living. I'll keep looking, Best regards, Bill. [quote][b]

Larry, thanks for the info. I'm sure they must make a fine product or they wouldn't sell so many. I was just thinking that for my needs something lighter might be sufficient. In 16 months of flying and near 90 hours, Babe has spent only three nights out of her's or somebody's hanger. Of course, in the next year I hope to change those numbers quite a bit. Best regards, Bill

Bill- I live near Amish country. There is a Amish guy about 8 miles up the road that makes custom covers for boats mostly. I'll drop by and ask him what the cost would be for a light weight cover. I'll get back to you. Repairs to N601AY are complete. Paint is next. Regards, Al

I'm not to the point that I need a cover yet but will be buying one in the future. I'll be interested to see what you come up with. The best material I ever saw came from Airtex but I don't believe they are making windshield / canopy covers anymore.

From my experience with other aircraft I have a few comments.

1.) You want a tight fitting, tight weave material that will not let any dust in and will not balloon or whip around in the wind. To do otherwise might result in damage to the plastic. Waterproofing is not absolutely necessary but water resistance is a good idea....also, try to find a material that will not shrink when wet.
2.) Pay careful attention to the material that actually comes in contact with the canopy.....it should not scratch the plastic nor hold dust or other abrasives.

Tim

I'm borrowing a KennonCovers.com cover (thanks Roy), and thinking of either buying one or making my own from the pattern.

The Kennon is nice, but heavy also. They are $350/$425 (deluxe).

I have a neighbour who made a *very* light cover from rip-stop nylon. I may do that for the occasional overnighter.

However.....if someone knows a good source and has a picture (Jack sounds like he's on to something!) I'd be interested too.

Cheers,
..lance

Bill- I went to Arthur IL this AM and talked to the Amish guy I had mentioned. I took a line drawing of a 601xl with me and described what you are looking for. He showed me some waterproof material that is pretty light, with a cotton like backside which would help keep the canopy from getting scratched. A fitted cover with adjustable 1 inch straps and plastic connectors that would go under the fuselage, he estimates the cost to be between $150-$200. This would include a small matching bag to store the cover in. I told him he could use my 601xl as a pattern maker. Let me know if you want me to pursue this further.
Thanks much for the offer of flight time and lodging. That is very kind of you. I cannot go anywhere now with my wife so ill. I really appreciate your offer tho. I hope to have my plane flying within a few weeks. depends now on my painting buddy getting the time to help.
Regards,
Al

Bill...I don't remember what they charged me for it, but I worked with Kennon Sunscreens (makers of professional aircraft covers) several years ago. I got them the pattern from another manufacture and they made me a very nice cover. I would think that they would still have the pattern. It is liable to be kind of pricey though.

Good Luck,

Hello Bill,

One thing to consider very important in any canopy cover, is not the price directly, but the type of material that is touching the canopy,  is important to be sure that will not scratch it with the normal movememt by the wind...

I still have no experience with canopy covers, but I have seen some airplane windshields replaced, because of seroius scratches by the cover (probably with some dust), looked like scratched with sand paper.

We are planning to install instead of a canopy cover in our 601 XL (once is finished),  some kind of instrument and seat cover (inside the canopy), mostly to hide what is inside... we now use converted car shades to cover our 701 canopy from the inside...

Saludos
Gary Gower.

Al, I'm sorry to hear your wife is still ill. Joy and I hope she recovers quickly. On the cover, sure sounds good to me. Ask him to make one, if you are satisfied I want one as well. I have to fly up to Griffin Tuesday to get the transponder certified. I plan on making some x-county flights this fall and winter. Best regards, Bill [quote][b]
