This post is directed to the folks who have experience installing the Grove landing gear on a 601XL.

I am about to order a quick build kit from Zenith and have decided I want the Grove gear. I do not know how much of the gear mounting is finished on the quick build kit. Grove was not able to provide any insight so I was wondering if anyone who has experience with the installation can comment on what mods I will need to do to fit this gear. Any pictures or other information you could share either on or off list would be appreciated.

I have searched the archive and could not find a great deal on the subject.

Hi Bob:

I have experience installing the standard gear and I
understand the Grove gear is thinner. I have also
seen the quick-build fuselage at Sun-n Fun and it is
pretty far along with the gear channel installed.

If I were in your shoes I'd look at making a spacer or
"insert" for the existing channel so the thinner,
Grove gear would ride down the center of the existing
channel. The next task would be to fabricate some new
main gear support parts. I fabricated the ZAC gear
supports according to the plans and it wasn't too
difficult. If you have the gear supports from your
kit you could weld two new bolts to each for your new
supports.

I bet you could bend two "U" channels to fit on each
side of the Grove gear inside the channel and new gear
supports and you would be in business. I just don't
see this as a big deal at all.

Email me off-line if you want to discuss this further.
