Group,

I have made the rear wing ribs and after forming the flange on the lightening holes there is a little crown (8mm) in the ribs. It was removed on the first four ribs with the L angles. Should all the ribs get L angles?

A technique discussed in the Metal Working 101 DVD was to increase some of
the crimps in the edge flanges using a crimping tool. Currently I am scratch
building the center section and, though I have not done the rear ribs, yet,
the technique worked on the nose ribs.

Hey Ron,
I got my ribs to be pretty flat by tweaking the crimps and making sure the flanges were 90 degrees. I used a small plastic head mallet to work on the flanges while they were laying flat on my work table. But, lets say you do the L angles on every rib. What's the end result? You'll add a few ounces total (at the most) and make your ribs a little stiffer. I can't see any harm, but I'm sure someone else will disagree. From what I've seen, the quality of your work is outstanding. I bet your ribs will be the same.

Hi Ron,

I know exactly what you are talking about... AFTER you crimp the edges, the
edges will be flat, but the center section of the rib, where the lightening
holes are, will still be bowed... I had the same thing happen to me...

I really don't think it poses a structural problem, and the factory parts
very well may have this same 'feature', I don't know, as I've never seen a
factory rib before...

I did, put angles on all of my ribs, not just the first 4 as the plans show.
I liked having the angles on all the ribs... I've been told by a few people,
who have never scratch built a plane, by the way, that this was totally
unacceptable since it 'wasn't by the plans', but I really don't foresee a
problem, and I'm not afraid of this from a safety perspective.

I've attached a picture of my right wing so you could see the angles I've
added.

Thanks,

Randy

Randy,

Well that's what I thought also, but I wanted to bring it up here so the next guy looking for this will be able to find it in the archives. I did search but its like it never made it in.
