It finally happened. After 8 months of being packed
away from my move, I was able to get my kit out and
start drilling some holes!

I was planning on scratch building the rest of my
plane. Whats the cheapest place for aluminum these
days? I know I could save on shipping by going with
Wicks since there is one nearby, but I don't know if
the cost of shipping is compareable to what I would be
saving by going somewhere else.

Thanks,
Dan Lykowski

Dan,

Does the Dynon Avionics after your name mean you work there or you are using
their stuff?

I'm scratch building... I bought all of my aluminum sheeting from Yarde
Metals. They were by far the cheapest I found. For smaller pieces of stock
you'll need, I'd recommend using Speedy Metals.

I'll paste URL's for both, the system my kick them out, but I'll try
anyways:
Speedy Metals: http://stores.ebay.com/SPEEDY-METALS-1-888-744-4140
Yarde Metals: http://www.yarde.com/

Hello Dan,

Just to know... Not relevant. Just what plane is it? 601 or 701...

And where are you located? Could be in your signature.

Well, good for you that you started, hope to hear soon about your first flight...

Lets all keep debouring, the most interesting part of building Smile

I am building a 601. I've had the tail kit for just over a year now. Between the move and just being busy I haven't had a lot of free time to work on it.

I live in the north Seattle area. The Wicks I am talking about is on the Arlington airport. (Location of EAA NW fly-in)
They told me they were willing to bring up whatever I need in their supply truck as long as I don't mind waiting a few weeks.

I work for Dynon Avionics as a software engineer, so feel free to ask questions. I will do my best to answer them, or find someone who can.

Glad to have you in the forum and sorry to hijack the thread but William Wynne praised the Dynon products and mentioned that you guys might be coming out with a probe kit for his Corvair engine. Any word on the status of that.

We don't plan on coming out with a probe, he did misquote a little.

For those who don't know what this is about..
WW's feeling is that directly coupling the tach input onto the coil is a bad idea that could cause the engine to stop, if the coil shorted to ground.

Our electrical engineers suggest attaching a very large resistor between the Dynon and the coil, attached directly to the coil.
This would work, and should by all means be safe to fly. The only possibility of fault is if the reisistor shorts which is highly unlikely.
Even if the wires break, the resistor will still not allow enough current to flow to stop the engine.

But, the research I am doing (since I am the one with the Corvair engine) is looking in to inductive coupling off of a spark plug wire.
The Dynon requires very very little current to drive the tach, in the millivolts if I remember correctly.
I am planning on using an Op amp to amplify the inductive signal picked up off the wires to the correct voltage that I need. Since the Dynon is just looking for a square wave it should be a pretty straight forward circuit.

Why not use the MSD GMR pick-up? Electrically isolated and easier to use
than a gear tooth pick-up.

"Convert tachometer signals without cutting or splicing. These MSD tach
signal GMR pickups simply attach, with no splicing or cutting, to a
current-carrying wire, and turn that information into a 12 V rpm signal.
That signal can then be used to activate a shift light, rpm activation
switch, or tachometer."

Hi Dan,

I read your description of a tachometer pickup and had a thought or
two for you to consider.

First, I wouldn't bother with the op amp - it sounds like too much
trouble. I would make an inductive pickup of a couple of turns of
wire around your source (spark plug wire?) and adjust the number of
turns until you get the desired voltage. I would also recommend a
clamping diode across your coil to prevent your signal from going
negative - that could hurt your input circuit big time (ask your EE
friends to explain latch-up for you). Also, if you are worried about
over-voltage you could use a zener diode in parallel with the
clamping diode to limit the maximum voltage. In all cases, your
circuit should not experience much power at all.

The above protections would probably be a good idea for input to your
op-amp or for direct input into the display system.

Good luck,

For those of us that aren't very electron literate, what size resister is
"very large"? And please keep us updated on the inductive coupling!

Craig,
That is exactly what I was looking for. I pick one
up and give it a shot. I'll let everyone know what I
find.

Oh.. And I know about using a zener. (I'm a software
guy with just enough EE to be dangerous Wink ) But, if
this pickup that Craig pointed out works, I won't have
to do anything other than post a link. Thanks for the
info guys.

Dan-
Forgive my ignorance, but speaking of pickups, does the Dynan connect to
a standard pitot/static tube, something task dedicated, or is it totally
independent?

Bill,
The Dynon needs to be connected to a pitot/static
system. Which brand/kind of system is up to you.
However, if you want to get angle of attack, you have
to use the pitot that we sell.

What do you do if you want heated pitot? Hook heated pitot to Dynon and use
separate alternative AOA? (Since Dynon hints of developing a heated AOA
pitot but declines to project what year it might be available).

Actually I misquoted him what he wrote was...

http://www.flycorvair.com/hangar0706.html
On the horizon, the highly reputable Dynon company has said they're willing to develop a Corvair specific EIS unit.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
But I'm glad to hear that you are going to use the Corvair. It'll be nice to have someone inside Dynon. I've been researching systems like yours for 3 years now and IMHO Dynon has the best bang for the buck. Which is the same reason I'm going with a Corvair.

Now we just have to make sure they play well together.

Just for the record the most recent announced updates really pushed you guys to the front of the line.

Gig,
I know what WW site says on his site..
I believe what was said was, "Dynon does not officially support the Corvair engine, but is willing to help anyone who wants to get it working."
But I would have to dig up the actual email.

But yes, since I am building a Corvair, I am looking in to it.
I think the best bet so far is the link that was posted a few days ago..
http://www.msdignition.com/2006/06-22.htm

I will be ordering one to try out as soon as my wife lets me have some money.

Good news. Now I don't have to putty up all the holes I drilled in my
outboard wing for the pick-up tubes! I figure a the weight saving of a Dynon
system will offset all those extra A5 instead of A4 rivets.
